Athxsb, January 31.—The trial of E. 0,
Whitthead for tbe murder of George Harde
man has been in progress at Oconee Supe
rior Conrt for several days of the past week,
and attracted mneh attention. The facta
the oase are abont as follows: In June,
1885, Whitehead, who was a tenant of Har
deman’s, on the McNorton plantation,
turned his cows into the orchard. This
provoked the wrath ot Hardeman, who went
to Whitehead's house, and, it is said, used
very insulting language to Mrs. Whitehead.
The same day as he (Hardeman) was going
to the field, accompanied by his wife, he
>assed where Whitehead and Mrs. Wbite-
tead were at work. Whitehead began
abusing him for insulting his wife, and
Beizing his gan, which was near, he dis
charged two loads at Hardeman, one
of which took effect in the
breast, killing him instantly.
Whitehead immediately tied, hut shortly
after was captured in White county and
brought buck to Ooonee. At the last term
of Superior court ho was tried, convicted
and sentenced to hang. His attorneys,
however, obtained a new trial on the
I {rounds of newly discovered evidence, to
:he effect that Mrs. Hardeman had said that
her husband was armed at the time of his
death. After rnuoh difficulty in securing a
