Then that settles it—the North can
never conquer you.
After some further talk the soldier carri

then Went tor his Colonel. Webb came
slowly np, and aa he dismounted at the hut
the banished Northerner said:
‘Colonel Webb, I am Cl iment L. Vidian-

ted States, imprisoned, vilUfled and banish
ed from my oonntry for my love of liberty
and free speech.”
The Colonel stiffly answered:
’Mr. Vallandigham, aaa citizen of Ohio
and the United States you are my enemy.
As one banished for hia love of liberty,
for which the South ia fighting today, I
bid you welcome to the Southern Confed
eracy.”
They then entered into a general oonver-
f a tion lasting about a half an hour, at the
end of which time Private Nunuelr e secur
ed a conveyance and Vailandigh-m and his
baggage were received inside the Confeder
ate lines. The incident made quite a stir
the picket pot, anil could tbe men have
bad their way they would have headed the
man for the Federal lines and obliged him
return, as they counted far more on
muskets the- speeches to win their cause.

Egg-Loving Sijulrrel,
Kings ton (It. V.) freeman.
An odd combat was witnegaed on the oor
n.r of Home acd Kierpontstreets, Rondont,
few .days ago betwten five robins, about
an equal number of sparrows, and a squir
rel. The bird* were all arrayed against the
squirrel. Tbe fight lasted over an hour,
when first discovered the birds were char
ing tbe nimble-footed animal from branch
to branch of a Urge tree. Tha birds swooped
down on the squirrel and pecked him with
theta sharp bills. In vain tbe little animal
tried to catch its enemies and defend itself
from their repeated attacks. It ran from
tree to tree in its effort to eroape. Its feath
ered antagonists were always on band, and
ponneed on it nnmercilnily.
Then the squirrel tried a new means of
escape. It ran down the tree, crossed the
road and a moment later wav seen on the
root of a neighboring bouse. The birds
espied it, and once more renewed the battle.
Down the leader of tho house slipped tbe
frisky Utile animal, tbe birds all the while
uttering thrill cries Across the street it
darted biok sgaiu aud up the tree where
tbe tight first began. Attack after attack
waa wade by the robins and sparrows. Iu
among the Italy branches and orotchea of
tbe tree ran ih. tquirrel, seeking a hiding
place. The birds gave it no rest, bat kept
continually darting and p« eking at it Fi
nally it ran to the top of a tree, crawled ont
on a slender limb and dropped ou th* tool
of Mrs. Buber's hou-e. it clambered over
the roof, pursued by ih. birds. Doan the
leader it slid rapidly, aud, running across
the yard, disappear*-.I Iron, view* and from
further pursuit. Probably the vquirrei hod
been attar rgzs and was eaugbt in the sot.
