Atlanta. J une 20 —The special commit
tee raised by the House of Representatives
to investigate th'eoonviot system and report
on the alleged abuses and ili-treatmeut of
convicts, with authority to sit daring tha
reoess, met at the Ktmbsll to-day. A meet
ing of the committee was oalied for last
month, but it was impossible to got them
sit togotber, and those who appeared ad
journed over till to-day. Every member of
tbe oommittee was present at tbe meeting
this afternoon: Hen W. A. Huff of Bibb,
chairman; Hon. William Harrison of Quit-
man, Hon. H W. J. Ham of Hall, Hon. J.
E. Sohodeldof Bihb, and Hon. J M. Terrill
of Meriwether. Ttie session this afternoon
was short, aud after transacting some pre
liminary bfn.iueas • in the way of organ
ization tbe oommittee aijonrned to
o'clock tomorrow morning Mr
Schofield, of Bibb, was selcoted as Beereta-
ry ot the committee, and lequested to pro-
oure and iay before the committee to-mor
row certain important documents, wbioh
will bo of value in tha investigation. While
there has been no appropriation to dofray
even the traveling expmses of the commit
tee, I am informed that the different mem
bers of the -ommittee have visited various
of tha oonviot camps, and will visit others
before the Legislature convenes, at thrir
own expense. So far, from what little
members of the committee have
leaked that they have come into
possession of come startling facta
as to the management and treatment of oon-
viots at some of tbe camps, which it true
are well calculated to make the public blood
curdle, and raise a storm of indignation
over the State. While I have heard this
much it is indefinite and notyet established
to the satisfaction of the committee, and I
am not permitted to-night to give it to the
public through tbe Teleoraph. However,
the sessions of the committee, beginning at
8 o'clock to-morrow morning, and contin
uing from day to day, will be held in the
Senate chamber, at tbe eapitol, and be open
to tbe pnblio. A number of important
witnesses will be put on the stand to-mor
row in tho hops of arriving at tbe truth of
the reports, and certain allegations which
have been laid before tbe committee. It is
expected that the testimony of several ol
these witnesses if they speak will enable the
committee to get at the oore of the oonviot
abuses, whatever they may be.
LATER.
In an earlier report, giving an account of
the meeting of tbe penitentiary investiga
tion oommittee thia afternoon, I referred to
the faot that tbe committee had oome into
possession of certain information aa to tbo
convicts at some of tbs camps wbioh, if
trne, wonld raise a commotion in tbo State
that wonld not down at tbs bidding
of tbe powerful, lessee influences. Since
then your correspondent has been able to
get more direotly at the oharges, and they
make a story that demands immediate,
thorough and severe examination. The
most damaging of these oharges involves
ex-Senator Jamas M. Smith, ot Ogletharpe,
one ot the lessees, and the aaene Is laid on
his plantation in Ogletharpe. It is oharged
that on Sunday, June Bib, a gang ot twenty
convicts, in charge of trusties, was put to
work in the wheat field to out and bind the
wheat. This of ltaelf, would be ex
traordinary enough, as the lessees
have no license to work tho
oonviots on tho Sabbath day. It is rola ted,
however, that the convicts rebelled at being
mode to work on Sunday, and refnsed to
obey tho trusties. They followed this up
by making an attempt to esoape, and two
ot the oonviots were shot down and 'killed.
Tbo deed oonviots were quietly buried that
night, and, although fifteen days have
