The Nicaragua canal bill was then tak en up and an effort waa mode by Mr. Gormou to have next Saturday fixed as the day to make the final vote on the bill, but objection van made by Mr. Turple. Mr. Pasco addressed the senate. He de clared himself In favor of the construe- tlon of the canal, but opposed to the plan set out In the pending bll’. Mr. Pasco stated that ho had given great attention to the subject of the Nlcit- raguan canal and was unable to see how the Interests of the United States and welfare of the American people could be adequately protected In the construction and management of the canal unless the national government had actual rv>ntrol and ownership of It, and he advocated the passage of a bill conceived In that i^nse. In other words, he favored the enterprise as a national measure, not as a corporate measure. Mr. Oaffery obtained the floor and the bill went over until tomorrow. Mr. Aldrich (Republican) of Rhode Island offered the following resolution “Resolved, That the senate of the United States, having in view public in terests and those of American citizens residing In the Hawaiian Islands, h the opinion that our government should be. represented In Hawaiian waters by one or more Ships of Its navy.” 'Let that resolution go over." said Mr. Morgan. “Let him get a vote upon It now,” was the suggestion of Mr. Butler. The resolution went over till tomorrow. The senate then proceeded to the con sideration of executive business and at 4:30 p. m. adjourned until tomorrow. THE DETAILED VOTE. City At torney James A. Anderson, -who is ttbc equal of Mr. Goff of New York as a manipulator of the toasting fork, will conduct the Investigation on the part of the city, while L. Z. Otosser, a well- known young attorney, will defend Baker, The Baker case will, however. In all probability prove only an inci dent to the Investigation. The mem bers of the committee are In favor of going to title root of tho trouble, and as they are vested -with fun power to compel tho a tends nee of witnesses, etc., It Is likely that the Investigation wm be the biggest sensation tho mu nicipal government (has over had. There are rumors already afloat that the police department will be attacked for protecting certain disorderly houses and for -winking at saloons, the back doors cf which are kept open after hours and on Sunday because men of Influence are interested In these estab lishments. It Is Imposatole to say Whether there Is any truth In these re ports or not, but their circulation Just now has made tho Investigation the sensation of the hour.
