yeni, which would Indicate a decrease In
acreage of about 10 per cent. This Infor
mation, together with telegrams from
Now Orleans estimating the amount of
at 225,000 bales, against 287,000 last week
and some Southern buying, held our mar
ket steady at the advance, despite the
pressure to realise profits by the local
longs. The selling from this source was
large at times, but tho market closed
riteady within 1 point of the highest prices
of the day. Tho bulls say that the con
tinued falling off in the movement of the
crop Is due to the exhaustion of supplies,
while the bears Insist that it Is due to
unfavorable weather. As the opinions on
this subject seem to be evenly divided,
time alone can decide who are right.
While this question is being decided prices
will continue to fluctuate up and down
the scale In accordance with the humor
of the traders, who will toe guided to a
certain extent by the receipts.

MANCHESTER .GUARDIAN’S ARTICLE
Manchester, Jan. 9.—The Guardian In
Its commercial article says:
The tone of the market has been unde
cided and Inquiry has been Irregular.
Transactions have also been Irregular.
In certain sections there has been rather
more business where manufacturers have
become tired of waiting for cheap bids,
and In some other sections engagements
have often enabled sellers to be firm,
but In a few cases the recently Increased
business has been satisfactory. There
has been much inquiry, but most of It
has been unworkab’e. The recent busi
ness with China and Japan has been
chiefly In nine-pound and heavier shirt*-
ings, but there Is now some Inquiry for
lighter goods, such as sheetings, Mexi
cans, drills and bleaching cloths. There
hds been a revival of demand from India
for cloths after a period of long inactiv
ity, and the lessor foreign markets have
bought occasionally and moderately.
There has been rather more Inquiry for
yams, but In sovne cases concessions have
been mado In order to secure business.

On light covering of “abort” oats today
that market firmed up. When business
was dull, which was frequently the cose,
the disposition was to follow wheat. May
oats closed Vi of a cent higher than yes
terday. In the cash market prices were
unchanged.
Provisions.—Packers sold product today,
but not enough to cause a decline In
prices. The bearish contingent are a lit
tle wary and kept out of the market os
llers. The firmness In hogw In the yards
assisted provisions a little, but the trade
was dull. The close wss 2V4 cents higher
than yesterday for May pork and May
ribs and IVfcaft cents higher for May lard.

I cuthbert * CO.’S LETTER.
New York, Jan. 9.—(Special.)—Cotton
was more active today. Prices advanced
7 to t points and closed quiet within 1
point of the highest, with sales aggre
gating 106,700 bales. All the news from
the South and Liverpool was of a slightly
bullish character, and while It. stimulated
an increased (speculative demand, there
was nothing in It to cause alarm among
the shorts or to precipitate a general
buying movement. The advices from Liv
erpool were specially encouraging, show
ing ss they dl<l, a better demand there
for actual cotton, with sales of 12,000
bales at 1-ltd advance, while futrn
closed firm at sn udvanca of 244d over
yesterday’s closing prices, Later private
rab.ea reported the Improvement as being
largely influenced by reported Urge pur
chases of futures during the post several
<Suya by Neill Bros, against sales made as
tailgas against spot cotton, and a rumor
that the firm was preparing a circular
