GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
Chicago, Jan. 23.—Rumors of Impend'
Ing trouble, which wore indefinite In
their tenor a'tud proved unimportant,
when actually announced and reports
of ,a large failure In the Httwd-.in^ grain
been learned of lut/r yesterday after
noon, gave to the wheat maTket this
morning a nervous and unsettled feel
ing. tvnen business* began prlcen had
not recovered an earlier loss which
they suffered on the cuffs and were,
in fact, slightly below the lowest un
official quotation. Several of the lslg
rtiorts considered the time opportune
for covering paper prefit* into actua.
ones, and. their buying Imparted tho
subsequent firmer feeling. When the
failure of William Young & Co., a
well-known and forerly influential Arm
became known, there was free selling,
not because »f endangered Interests,
but purely through sentiment, which
gave values another blow and marked
another low record. .May wheat open
ed from 53 3-4 to 53 5-8; sold, between
64 1-4.3-8 and 53 3-8; closing at 53 5-8u,
3*1—l-2ao-8 cents under yesterday. Ca«h
wheat was weak and 1-2 cent per buoh-
cl lower.
Oom—The uneasy condition' of wheat
had a decided dampening effect on
corn at the beginning of the seslon,
but the subsequent rally In the lead
ing grain and a good Inquiry for cash
corn overcame the tloprcadon. The
full complement of strength was not
maintained throughout, but recessions
were only fractional, the price not nus-
tclnlrog any loss from yesterday. May
corn opened front 45a45 1-4; sold be
tween 45u45 3-4a7-8; closing at 45 1-2—
unchanged from yesterday. Cash
corn was l-4al-2 cents higher than yes
terday.
Oats-Thc fluctuation In oats were
very much •hni'.ar to those of corn.
The cash market was still firm, the
demnnd in that branch of the trade
keeping up and sellers being nhlo to
obtain from l-4al-3 advance on yester
day's prices. This feature had a good
influence on the futures. No activity
greater than ordinarily seen existed,
however. May oats closed 1-8 cent
hisher limn yesterday.
l’rovlslons—Commission homes done
some selling for their country custom-
era In thla market today, the selling
being rather restricted. Packers were
on both sides of the market, but their
operations were not largo enough to
