The Agricultural Train.
( The much looked for visitor, the Ag
ricultural college on w heels, ha> come
and gone and a great number of people
were here to greet it Monday after
noon- The train rolled in about three
o’clock, a half hour ahead of the sche
dule, ard court being in session at the
time many of the sturdy farmers of the
county were detained until it was too
late to hear and see what was to be
seen and heard. Some say that four
thousand people were gathered around
the train shortly after it arrived, but
hundreds could not get close enough to
either see or hear. The train cut it’s
stay short, too, and not half the peo
ple had time to get through it.
The train was made up exactly as re
ports said and the exhibits were very
creditable. The lectures, too, were
good, but the managers are making a
mistake in not staying longer at each
place. They are visiting the country
to try to benefit the farmer, but when
the train arrives the city people
crowd in ahead and the farmer is prac
tically kept out. Had the train re
mained in Lyons four hours instead of
less than two the benefit would have
amounted to something, but in the
short time it was here very little in
formation could be gotten.
Commissioner Hudson was one of
the speakers and he made good. He
took special pains with farmers and he
gave out information that was valu
able. There were other speakers also
and a great lot of literature was given
out. Prof. E. C. J. Dickens, of the Ist
District College, was piloting the train
through the district and he worked all
he could to have the farmers see all
that could be seen.
The idea ot running the train is a
good one, the promoters are doing the
proper thing, but we want to suggest
if it is continued next j ear that a long
er time be gi ven in each of the cities
and town that are visited.
