HIGH AND HOLY THINGS.
, |
The Advance is proud of its advertisers, and
we are especially glad to carry in our columns ad
vertisements from two of the Sunday schools of
Vidalia. Live churches in many sections have
found that advertising in ihe newspapers does much
to stimulate church attendance and interest, and
we feel sure that the !ucal Sunday schools that
are using printers ink will derive much benefit
from their expenditures for advertising.
Sunday morning, speaking* to a men’s class of
over fiftv members at one of the local Sunda
schools, Rev. Bascom Anthony said that a few
years ago such a class in a town this size would
have been worthy of comment but that such
classes were now found in practically every town
and city. All over the land, he said, the church
buildings were taxed to capacity by the men. wo
men and children who flocked to the Sunday school,
and that all Sunday schools now boasted of large
men’s classes.
The speaker said he could give no explanation
for it unless the men of the*, country were becom
ing impressed with the necessity of turning to high
and holy things; that in these troublous times our
country and its institutions were in danger unless
there was safe anchorage to the church, and that
everywhere there was an unconscious realization
of this fact, as shown by the unusual attendance
of the men in the Sunday schools of the towns.
We are glad to note that the Sunday schools
of Vidalia report an attendance at their schools in
creasing practically every Sunday, and yet the at
tendance is pitifully small. When you think of the
2,000 white people in Vidalia, our Sunday school
attendance should reach 1.000 or 1,200. Our Sun
day schools have nothing to boast of and must feel
that there has been dereliction of duty and a fail
ure to seize a golden opportunity until that mark
is reached.

A CREDIT TO THE CITY.
•
The splendid natatorium now in course of
erection by local capitalists is going to be an ex
cellent advertisement for the city and distin tlv
creditable to our growing community. We arc n
on the seashore and we have our hands full taking
care of sewers and paving and schools, that the
matter of a municipa l swimming pool, which every
city ought to have, is far in the future. However,
we are doing the next best thing—building a pri
vately owned swimming pool, and it is a pleasure
to chronicle the fact that it will soon be completed.
Some idea of the size of the natatorium may
be gained when it is stated that there will be ninety
dressing rooms and that the main pool will have a
depth of nine feet. whj»e there will be shallow
pools for children and those who do not swim. We
do not doubt sos a moment that it is going to be
a popular place and that it is going to make the
summer much pleasanter for the stay-at-homes,
one of whom we expect to be which.

CREAMERIES NEEDED.
* «. • *yr ...
Citizens of Dublin are becoming interested in
the organization of a co-operative creamery, and
newspaper reports state that the plan is meeting
with much encouragement on the part of the farm
ers and that it will probably be built.
This is an undertaking to which the business
men of Vidalia should turn then attention. We
believe the farmers in this section are eager to
I break away from cotton farming, but before cot
ton can be made a distinct surplus crop, a sure
money crop must be in sight. South (»eorgia
needs to cultivate and encourage the dairying in
dustry ; it goes well with an already well establish
ed program of hog and cattle raising, and it is what
is needed to round out our policy of diversification.
With a co-operative creamery in Vidalia, with
trucks going out all our main roads and coßecting!
cream about three times a week, every farmer who
would keep a few cows could have a good monthly
income from his herd. There would be a good
sized check to deposit in the bank every month;
the drudgery of churning and butter-making would
he taken off the busy housewife, and there would
he a splendid return for the investment in the herd,
for the home-raised feed and for the work of milk
ing. Then every year our lands would he becom
ing more fertile, cattle, hog and poultry raising
would come more and more into profitable promi
nence in this section and many a white farmer
would be attracted to this section to share our ag
ricultural prosperity.
We hope our business men will get behind
this matter, make a thorough canvass of our sec
tion and see if the farmers will not promise to
keep the needed number of cows to make a co-op
erative creamery a success.
X
You fellows who have been wishing for hot
weather —we hope you are satisfied.
x
Governor Dorsey knows now what all news
paper men know, that telling the truth will make
you decidedly unpopular.
x
Now if the high school graduates will just take
even a sma’l part of the advice which has been,
showered upon them* success is theirs.
x
Think of taking a few acres of South Georgia
land, putting them out in pecans and berries and
being offered SSOO per acre for your land. That
was what was offered a Vidalia farmer recently,
and he bluntly refused the offer, acting on the sup
position that if the land was worth that much to
the other man, it was worth it to him. It just
h- ws what values are going to be put on South
Georgia lands by progressive farmers.
x
Vidalia needs and must have a potato curing
house. The delectable spud is coming to its own.
Recently thirty bushels of sweet potatoes, cured
bv the kiln-dried process, were started for London.
They arrived there on April Ist and" were immedi
ately offered for sale. Within the day they were
all sold at a price of 10 cents' per pound. London
advices say that the potatoes reached there in good
condition and commanded a ready market. Ihe
results of the test show conclusively that the Geor
gia sweet potato raisers can make a neat profit
on their products by snipping them to European
points for sale.

What Good Is a Lid?
Several otherwise excellent burial vaults have tops that are simply laid
( over the casket and left to their own devices. This, of course, is
handier and much cheaper. But what of its safety? The Norwalk
Vault leaves nothing to chanoe ; its top is securely cemented on by hand,
and top and bottom become one solid piece of masonry. Naturally, there
fore, the Norwalk is sold everywhere the best is wanted; and naturally the
best undertakers always recommend the Norwalk—it gives them a chance to
guarantee the burial.
