\ou will remembei that on r lues- ,
day next, which is the 2nd day of
May, 1905, that the Southern Cotton
Association of Screven County meeG
in its regular session at Sylvania.
All members are especialy urged
to be present, as business of impor
tance to them and our country is to
be considered.
The district organizations will all
have representatives present, and the
chairman of these various district or
ganizations are each expected to be
present, as well as, the Secretary
and treasurer. We cannot attend to
business satisfactory without you
are all present. The time has now
arrived for some active work in the
various district organizations, as the
information that is required to be
furnished by the various 'district or
ganizations to the country organiza
tions and by them to the state
organizations, as to the amount
of fertilizer used in the year
1904 and 1905, as well as the num
ber of acres planted in the year 1901
and 1905, requires some systematic
effort. The cotton producers, as
well as, the bankers aud business
men of the South certainly by this
time begin to realize and fully ap
preciate the condition of affairs, that
confront us. If we propose to avoid
reaping the inevitable results of four
and five cent cotton, it will require
the united effort of all, and that eff
ort put fourth without further delay.
It needs no arguement to demon
strate the strength of united action.
It was clearly demonstrated by this
organization when it was framed in
New Orleans on Jan. 26th, 1905, and
by the united action of its members,
by holding their cotton only partly
from the market, advanced the price
of cotton within two months two
cents per pound. Then there was a
lagging of interest and lack of ten
acity shown, and then a rush made
to see who could market his cotton
first,. The results is upon us and

f er tiii zer has been brought forward
so prominently before the people it
- g i m p ress j 0 n that this is the on
object o{ our organizat ion. This
ig a falge lmpi . essl0n . The purposes
^ f bis or g an ization are as broad as
industrial development of the South
requires.
One of the objects of this organi
zation is to extend and introduce our
cotton products into other lands and
countries, which are now useing but
very little if any of our cotton pro
ducts.
Another , is . to promote , the .. building ,
of cotton factories in our section and
where the cotton is produced.
Thirdly, to do away with the cotton
speculators and to establish trade
lations direct between the producer
and manufacturer.
The space allowed me at this time
will not admit of comment upon these
three objects of the organization and
the benefits to be derived there from,
but any reasonable man can see at a
glance that an organization of suffi
cient strength alleging themselves
together for the carrying out of such
purposes can be of untold benefit to
our south land.
i propose at a later time to write a
series of articles upon the objects of
his organization and the benefits to
be derived there from.
Yours respectfully,
H. S. White.
