ROADMAKING DISCOVERY.
Combination of Rooks Better Than tho
Uaa of Ono Kind.
An important fact In connection with
pood roiul making bus been developed
by the office of public roads, says the
Washington Star. One of the most im
portant .mutters In road building has
been the formation of a good top sur
face that will hold together well. It
has been found that by the proper
combination of common rocks It is
possible to get a much better wearing
surface than by the use of a single sort
of rock, and material that is very un
satisfactory when used alone may he
very valuable when used In combina
tion with something else. It has taken
u good deal of what “practical” farm
ers and some statesmen would call
“fancy lias science” to develop the facts.
It been known for a long time
that granite or diabase, while a hard

road surfaced with limestone mac

rock, was difficult to bond under the
road roller and consequently n poor
surfacing material. But it was found
that by mixing limestone with it the
bonding value was greatly Increased.
The practical application of this was
to treat the surface of tho granite
roads with a top dressing of limestone
screenings. As shown by laboratory
tests, tho granite alone had a bonding
value of six. The limestone alone had
a bonding value of twenty. Now, in
the scale of values anything as low as
ten is regarded as poor material.
Twenty is fair, forty is good, and any
thing above fifty is excellent. It was
found that when the limestone and tho
granite were combined they had a ce
menting value of eighty-two. So the
value of the fact brought out Is appar
ent.
The facts are brought out in a rather
technical report of Professor A. S.
Cushman and Prevost Hubbard of the
road office on “The Decomposition of
Feldspars.” The report Itself does not
make very illuminating reading for the
layman, but the essential fact is regard
ed as of great practical importance.
Farmers Urge $6,000,000 For Roads.
At the farmers’ institute held re
cently at Norristown, Pa., resolutions
were adopted asking the legislature to
- Tnake an additional appropriation of
$6,000,000 to the state highway depart
ment for new roads and favoring the
reappointment by Governor Elect Stu
art of A. L. Martin, a director of the

Cipher WrltlnK.
The nrt of secret writing, or writing
in cipher, was, according to l’oiyblus,
Invented by jBnens, author of a trea
tise on tactics and other works, lie
produced twenty methods of writing
In cipher, which no person could un
fold, but wo doubt much whether they
would preserve this quality at the pres
ent day. It is no less strange than
true that this art, so Important in di
plomacy, as long as couriers are
to be intercepted, was held in abhor
rence by the elector Frederic II., who
considered It as a diabolical invention.
Trlthemius, nbbot of Spanhelm, had
composed several works to revive this
branch of knowledge, and Bovillo, an
ignorant mathematician, being unable
to comprehend the extraordinary terms
he made use of to explain his method,
published that the work was full of di
abolical mysteries. Polssevln repeated
the assertion, and Frederic, in a holy
zeal, ordered the original work of Tri
Ibemius, which he had In his library,
to be burned as the Invention of the
