TUESDAY FEBRUARY 1 1881.
Official Organ of Talbot County.
THIS I'OUTHO-.MIMTAItV OKU FT,
It iu a fact worthy of note that the naiN
itary organizations generally of the
United Stttcslmve received invitations
to pnrticipnte in the ceremonies incident
to the inauguration of Gen J A Garfield
ns President of the United States. As n
matter of interstate comity this is all
well enough, hut there h evident in the
fact of Mich n military display at the
National Capitol a deeper idea than that
carried hy the mere courtesy of the
vitation. When Mr Hives was inaug
urated Gen Grant declared that he would
see him duly installed into the Presidcns
ey, and to this end concentrated the
military at Washington. Now that Gen
Garfield is to be in .1 acted into the Freni -
dent ml office, a formal invitation is ex
tended to nil the military organizations
oi the Union. This action is not only
palmtive of Gen Grant’s massing of troops
r.t Hayes* Inaugorat, ion, but is intended
to serve as a precedent *or future occa
cAsious of a similar character. Further
more, the military in t!io course of a few
years will become uccustotnedj to these
quadrinni.il pageants, and will not be
avers**, especially thorn from republican
states to carrying out on a more extend
ed scale G< n Grant’s idea of inaugurating
a President’ Then • tacts, coupled with
the centralizing tendencies of the Repub
lic iti party, point to an early time in
A meric in history when no President will
be installed Into office without the coer
civc force, if med lie, of the national
niilltaiy. This party of high morality
and shrp practices intend to rule or
uiiu America and thus, while the peo
ple are Attending to their material infer
ests and everything is dreaming of a
golden prosperity, aro weaving a military
not around the nation, and pushing in n
most cautions manner Hus military idea
of government into the minds of the poo*-
pie. There n danger in the military
idea. It is the Tr jin hors* fraught with
the chn is that are to shackle political
vassals fnd clangor over the fair fie-ds
and otherwise quiet hear hstores ol a con
qnered deoplo. The military at the Na*>
tiomi! Capital! Tuis Is the strong idead
government of the ultra republicans.
Yet, how| strangely ami unsuspectingly
the pionlo become familiar with tue rod
that has fearfully smitten them; and the
same power, wielded by a red handed
President, will smite again all that dare
gainsay his construction of the c*mstitu
turn uml his execution of the law.
