Washington, Mureh 24. Governor
Brown road© a ten s'rike by his clear
argument in the Seiute to-day. No
speech put the d* mociutie case a clearly
u hi*. He allowed that ol one hundred
thousand office-holders under the gov
ernment only a few lone individuals
were democrats, and then he proved that
the majority of the people voted Against
the republican party. It was a powerful
argument against changing the present
officers of the senate during the session
called simply for executive business as
could have been much*. Alluding to Ma
hone, he said that the happy dty had
coroo when the republican iioo and res
adjuster lamb lie down together and the
little general leads them, and empba**
sized the humility the republican sua)-
wuit > iniut leel to think that they hold
power which may be destroyed In tho
breath of a confederate brigadier. When
Air Logan taunted him with being a re
publican lu 1888, he cluarly defined the
reasons why ho had then acted vith the
republicans, and put Mr Logan in an
embarrassing attitude by showing up his
poli;ical record. The speech v/hh deiiv
eied with Air Brown s characteristic cool
ness. and wai> so pregnant with souud
He-nse and convincing logic that all who
heard it recognized iu him a true .eader,
Th© democratic senators were highly
pleased, and general comment agrees that
great tilings are to he expected of Utor
gia‘a new senator. No two men fill more
ol the public gaze here than Mchhah.
Hill and ILowu. Both have been of sig
nal service to their party recently.

An exposition is to be held in Atlanta
this fall, the main objects of which will
be to learn more about cotton, and the
machinery used in its manufacture. It u
claimed that the result will bo an in
creased saving in the price to planters, in
tho superior modes, and the necessity
therfore ot handling cotton wilt bo fully
demonstrated. But, aside from all this,
Georgia will have an opportunity to show
wlmt she is, what she has, what she can
do. There is not a county in tho Bfcate
but what should have its timber, it* pro.
ductions nnd its minerals systematically
represented in the exposition with a man
to call attention to them and to show
thorn. This should be done, and the
Legislature should provide for thoir
col loot ion and in pamphlet
form for distribution here, there and
everywhere. What we want is more peo
ple who will bring money and muscle
with them. If we get them w# must first
show them what we have and what we
can do. By proper action, tho entire
*tnU would thus be benefited even more
than Atlanta, by the proposed cxposi
tiou.—Exchange.
ThE SENATE*
A quorum of tho senate is 39. That
number must be present in order to
transact any business. That numbei
must vote in order to pass any resolution.
Judge Davis has decided to vote with the
republicans in the matter of senate of
fleers, and ha together with Mr Mahone
would give the republicans just 39, if all
of their men were iu their seats. Mi
Edmunds is in South Carolina in very
poor health, nnd tbras other republican
senators are paired The democrats can
therefore by simply withholding then
consent prevent Mahons A Co.,from put
ting their selections into office. There is no
reason why the change should bo made
until December.
