New Industry-
Broom corn is likely at no dis
tant day to revolutionize the broad
stntt' supply of the world, A pro
cess has been discovered bv which
the fi est aDd most delicious flour
cun be made from the seed to the
lit nt of one-half its weight, and
leave the other half a valuable
food for making beef and milk.
The average yield per acre is three
hundred bushels, or thirty thou
sand pounds h ve been secured.
Nor does it exhaust the soil as In
dian corn, from the fact that it
feeds from the deepest soil, and as
similates its food from a cruder
state. It belongs to the same ge
nus as the sweet cane commonly
known as sorghum, which as an ar
ticle of food is growing rapidly in
public esteem, and from the seed
of which a most uutricious flour
can be obtained.

The Fence Law-
We make the extract below from
the report of tho Commissioner of
Agriculture:
Since tlie last quarterly report
was issued, four counties of this
State have adopted the stock law,
which requires die fencing of stock
instead of crops. Tuis is the en
tering wedge to the most important
measure of agricultural reform that
lias been inaugurated in Georgia
in the last, half century. There are
portions of the State, especially tho
range country of Southern Georgia,
and some of the mountain counties
of North Georgia, in which the
stock law would be a hard
ship, but it has become a necessity
in the farming and planting regions
of the State, in somo of which tho
timber suitable for making rails is
nearly exhausted, Tho adoption
of tho stock law in all except the
range and mountain counties is onj
ly n questiou of tirao, boing a ne-.
cessity which must impress itself
upon the minds of all t liuking
men. It is wise therefore, for all
farmers in the farming and plant
ing eounuos of tho State to pre
pare for the stock law iu advance
of its adoption by planting perma
nent pastures in the grasses best
adapted to their soils and climate.
Foi information on this subject they
are referred to fie ward's Manual
on grasses and forage plants in (ho
South, anew edition of which has
just been issued, and the chapter
on grasses and forago plants in the
Manual ou Cattle issued from this
department in 1880. The recom
mendations already made in this
report as to sowing small grain tor
soiling and for pasture, are appro
priate to those comities iu which
the stock law will go iuto cifuet
next January.
A whale recently wan stranded
on mi outlying point ol tho ie and
of Walls, Orkney, men, women and
children rushed to the spot with
knives, pitchforks, and moro prim
itive weapons, and cut the monster
in a feai fill manner until it was sup
posed that life was extinct. Ropes
were afterward procured uod fast
ened to the whale, and boats were
proceeding to low it into tho liar,
bor. With tho rising tide the
whale floated; but astheboaU were
being rowed away in triumph with
tho prize the whale suddenly took
a fresh lease of life and started sea
ward, in tu>-n towing the boats.
It was only after being dragged
over three miles that the men suc
ceeded in cutting tho ropes aud
saving their boats from being
swamped.

few private entertainments given, and
none which equal those ot former soi.-
