The South Waking Up-
Wall Sfcrcot N. Y. Nows.
The South, too, is waiving tip, and
it must bo remembered tmi the
South of to-day is a very different
affair from the distracted, distressed
aud disturbed section ot a few years
ago. Industrial foreos have been
working in the sileut but ifiectivo
way in which these forces always
operate, aud to-day the South is
quiet and contented because rapid,
ly gnawing in wealth. Politics nro
of the past. Commerce and agri
culture of the present. All our
dispatches speak of the excellent
couditiou of things down thsroyand
the yearly increasing wealth of tho
people. Housos in tho streot with
a Southern clientage find that it is
becoming more and more valuable.
It exhibits a constantly widening
tendency, Tho sploudid promise
of the crops of the South this year
lias bad tho effect of bringing iu
large purchasing orders, and more
will como. Their effect has already
been shown in tho advancing prices
of Southern stocks and bonds. We
know of one house having au exten
sive Southern custom, which reports
their orders increasing iu numbers
daily, while a great mauy custom
ers write aud telegraph th it at the
first reaction of tho market they are
coming in. Naturally, those poople
tiado most in Soutl o ti properties,
tho value of which they know. As
to reactions, however, tho groat op
erators are looking for them just
now. Ou tho contrary, they have
found tho market carried so lar
away from them by tho public that
their chief efforts now aro turned to
accumulating stocK to keop pace
wit ;ho popular demand. If it be
so great at this time it may be im -
agined what it may bo later, when
all tho prosout promise of the crops
of the country has boon fulfilled iu
the harvests.
ATrue Doe Story.
The animal in this case is owned hy
a party residing within a few rods of
<his office, and the facts c tine directly
from the family. The dog is a white
terrier, of a most affectionate disposi

any stranger to whom site takes a fan

hind legs, and reach out her fore patvs
for recognition. A clay or too since
a boy called at the side door to beg
something to eat. The dog trotted to
the door with the servant, who told
the beggar that she had nothing for
him. “(Jive me only a piece of
bread,” said the hoy. The girl an
swered that tie y were out ot bread,
and that she was baking nt that
time. Meanwhile the dog was mo
mentarily missed, but quickly res
mined bearing in her mouth a 1 ,rgo
piece of bread that hud previ u.sly

On communion Sunday an old

attended the Hermitage Church

After the service was over lie was
observed to be unusually silent and
thoughtful, and upon being ques

JIo concluded his narrative thus:
When I saw the man who had

Law in the Wild. West.
A Carson City paper reports the
following livoly law proceedings;
Yesterday afternoon a young man
came into Justice Carey’s court
room, with the rim of hi 9 hat drawn
down over his eyes, and remarked:
Do you know me? I think re.

the chap I sentenced for stealing
about a year ago. That’s just tho
hairpin I am, repiiod the other, aud
there’s S2O for my fine. But you
served your term iu jail, said the
judge and owe no hue.
That’s all right, old boy, but I'm
about to commit an atsault and
battery, and I guess I'll settle now.
You're the man I propose to lickj
Oh, that's it-! rejoined the court,

start in, and we'll call it square.
Tho young mau advanced to the
left and let out his left. The judge
ducked his head, and, rising up, lif

right-hander and sent him over
against tho wall, In a moment the
court ivas clinging all over the man,
and iu about throe minutes his face
was hardly recognizable. Tho mau
begged the court to let up, which
ho finally did. As the fellow was
about to go out Carey wont after

How to Kilf Hawks.
A citizen of Litusoiiti comity lias
discovered a way to kill hawks.
Tho Gazette thus reports tho plan;
Cos: fine all your chickens exoept an
old hen; take each one of the bid
dies aud put ft drop of syrup and
strychnine on tho feathers at the
back ol tho head. The hawk inva
riably eats tho head first, and he
says that in one place where there
were hundreds of hawKs, uot one is
is now to be found. If the chic Kens
wore to cat the strychnine from
each othor, it would not kill them,
for they emo into existence with
their eyes open, and strychnine
will only kill such animals as arc
born with their eyes shut.
