The Love Bug.
Su Fnucisvo l’ost,.
A California physician who discov
ered a n-w disease—love madness—
has been experimenting with the pet
sons afflicted therewith and has pro
duced the “love parasite," or bacillus
mieroccus. This he cultivated up to
the twentieth generation, and With the
parasites of that generation lie inocu
lated a number of subjects. The in
oculation was invariably successful,
symptoms of the disease appearing in
a very short time after the operation.
A bachelor, aged 50 years, on the first
day after inoculation had his whiskers
eyed, ordered a s-.Ht of new clothes
and a set of false teeth, bought a top
buggy, a bottle of hair restorer, a dia
mond ring and a guitar, and began
reading llyron’s poems. The inocula
tion produced symptom of the same
nature in a young lady of 45. She
spent $5 at a drug store for cosmetics,
bought a lot of new hair and a cro
quet set, sang “Empty is the Cradle,"
sent out invitations for a party, and
complained that the Chico young
men do not go into society. An in
oculated youth of 17, employed in a
country store, did up a gallon of mo
lasses in a paper bag, and also in a fit
of absent-mindedness, put the cat in
the butter-tub and threw some frcsli
butter out of the window. Finally he
sat in a bi’sket of eggs while looking at
the photograph of a pretty girl and was
discharged for his carelessness. The
Chico doctor is still experimenting, and
will soon lay tin - results of his observa
tions before the medical tvoriil.
Something Like an Eyo.
One ot tint wonders of the insect
world is their marvel 1 us eye pow
er. It is iliflloult, for instanoo, to
Hlriko ally with the hand because it
lias, figuratively speaking, got eyos
on the back of its head, its four thou
sand eye-lenses enabling it to see all
round, Kach one of these eyes is a
perfect one in itself. It lias its own,
corner aud its own lens. Some anat
omists suppose that these eyes only
form a single picture to the insert;
but il they each act separately, as
there appears good ground to suppose,
the vision of the hand in an aggress
ive manner must be telegraphed to its
brain as a most monstrous picture of
cruel fists. The common white (or
cabbage) butterfly jf suburban back
gardens is even more largely gifted
with eyes than the fly. It has seven
teen thousand eye-lenses—the same
number as the dragon fly. Beetles
are still better provided, twenty-five
thousand eye lenses being the number
alotted to them. “To creatures thus
endowed with microscopic \ision a
cloud of sandy dust must appear like
an avalanche of massive rock frag
ments, and everything else propor
tionately monstrous.
How He Fixed Him.
Two .men strolling in the woods
without any arms in their poswssion
observed a bear climbing a tree,
with its paws clasped around the
trunk, Duo of them ran forward
and caught the boar’s paws, one in
each blind. He then called out to
his comrade: Johnathan, run
home ami bring ino something to
lull tho varmint. Miud you, don't
slay, or lam in a fix, Johnathan
ran oft’, but sitiyod a long time,
During the interval the bear made
several attempts to bite the hands
of him who held it. At length
Johnathan came back. Ildlowbat
kept you so long? Well, 111 tell
you. When I got. homo breakfast
was ready, so I stopped to out it.
Well, said his comrade, come you
now and hold the critter wiulo I
kill it. Johnathan seized the bear's
paws and hold tho animal. Well,
have you got hold of him? 1 guess
I have. Very well, then, hold fast,
I‘u oft’for dinner.
The Tame Heifer the Better
Steer-
Detroit Free Pros*.
Constable Jones held an execution
against a farmer, and when he called
for a settlement the agriculturalist took
him out into a big pasture and point
ed out a wild steer as flic particular
piece of property to be levied upon.
Jones chased the steer around for
awhile, and then sat down, and then
taking out his book, began to write.
“What are you doing there?”
asked the granger.
“Charging mileage,” replied the
constable without looking up.
“Do I have to pay it all?” gasped
the granger.
“You bet.”
“Then take this tame heifer here.
I can’t stand any such game as that,”

The Helpful Man.
There is a man, said his noighbor,

who has done more good, I really
believe,in this oomiuuuity than any
other person who ever lived in it,
lie cannot talk very well in prayer

er moves into the village that he
does not find them out to give them
a neighborly welcome and olfor any
little service bo can render. lie is
is usually on tho lookout to give a
stranger u seat in a pow at church.
He is always ready to watch with a
sick neighbor aud looks at er bis
affairs for him, and I’ve sometimes
thoughthoaud his wife Kept hoino'
plants iu winter just for the sake of
sending little bouquets to invalids.
He finds timo for a pleasant word
for every child he moots, and you’ll
find them climbing into his one

load, lie really seems to liavo a
genuine love f r helping folks in all
sorts of a way, and it does mo go id
