TALBOTTON, GA., TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17,1882.
Worthy of Congratulation,
The people of Georgia are to bo
congratulated on the result of
Wednesday's election. They havo
done well in calling to the execu
tive chair a ata'esnian of such wide
experience) and such nigh renown
as the sago of Liberty Hull, In
honoring Air Stephens the people
honor thorn-elves. Mr Stqihoas is
a great, man, great in his simplicity,
in his oxporioucc, in hi) integrity,
and in his utter devotion to tho best
istorosts of tho people, Tho very
highest hopes of his administration
may be indulged in with tho cer
tainty that they will bo fulfilled in
every detail and particular. Ho
w ill bo tho governor of the whole
people, and will bo accessible hr the
humblest oilizon. Ho will bo con-
trolled by no ring, or combination
of rings, lie will be his own boss.
Ho will conduct tho affurs of his
otlico with wisdom, prudence and
economy. lie will seek to promote
the happiness and prosperity of tho
of every class, color and ooudilition.
His administration will perpetuate
tho harmony and unity of tho dem
ocrats party, which, in Georgia,
means tho organization and combi
nation of the best elements for tho
oroinution of tho beat interests of ill
classes of citizens. This is what
democracy mean* in Georgia, and
it has never ac liovod a more hope,
ful victory, nor conio nearer to car
rying out its designs than in tho
election of Mr Stephens. Wo re

A Now York correspondent o’

They don't annoy mo at nil, said

of them have seen hotter days.
They don't want, much—just enough

I wouldn't liko to disappoint them.

rope on account of sea sickness, tho
proposition to build a railroad by
which one can go trom Now York
to Paris in fifteen days, by an all
rail route, except forty miles on a
steamer, or two hour's ride, will be
interesting. It hardly soems possi
ble that such a thing can bo done,
until you read tho scheme, which is
as follows: Ilis lino or route, start

tho States, passes through Canada,
Now Georgia and Alaska to Cape*
l’rinct of Wales, whence tho passen

Rise of the New Rebellion.
Connor Journal.
Tho people are in revolt in both
parties; tho machine is to bo‘smash
ed;' tho loaders to ho dispersed.
The fooling of bitterness and dis
diseonient in confined to no section
or Stnte; it is deep and wide spread;
it is manifest iu Pennsylvania, in
Colorado, in California. It moans
that there are to ho new men and
now blood iu politics, new issues
and alignments, new methods and
now controlling forcos. One cannot
just yet prodiot how powerful it
will bo, how far-reaching; but there
is no mistaking its genuineness and
reality. It may prove a veritable
renaissance; a revival of patriotism,
a protest tangible and terrific,
against parties and politicians,
against old superstitions, against
practices in public affairs abhor
rent to men ol principle and charac
ter, and which they would not in
private lifo tolorato for a momout.
Important to Farmers.
A correspondent of the Savannah
Nows says; I bog to call attention,
through tho columns of your paper,
to a very dangerous prnotico among
tho cotton ginucra that lias recent
ly eomo to my knowledge, I learn
that when cotton is tod to a gin in
a damp it clogs tho saws so that it
cannot ho run rapidly, but that if
oil is poured on them it does not
adhoro to them—and it is a common
practice among ginners to oil tho
saws when they have damp cotton
to gin. Oiled cotton will tako fire
spontaneously at a temperature
of about 110 degrees, a tomporature
often reached in the sunshine, in
oloso cars or warehouses, and in tho
holds of ships; and tho practico of
oiling cotton gins endangers lives
and property to an extent that can
not bo estimated Many tiros nt
sea that have not been nooountod
for may have originated from this
cause.
Two Citizens that Differed.
From the Burlington tlawkeyo.
During the shower yesterday a citi
zen carrying a very wet umbrella en
tered a hotel to pay a call to some
one up stairs. After placing his um
brella where it might drain, he wrote
upon a piece ct paper and pinned to
it the sentence :
N. B.—This umbrella belongs to a
man who strikes aSO pound blow —
back in fifteen minutes.
He went his way up stairs, and af
ter an absence of fiteen minutes, re
to find his umbrella gone and in its
place a note reading :
P. S. —Umbrella taken by a man
who walks ten miles an hour —won’t
he back at all.

not refined as she might be. The
Episcopal clergyman, h*pp> ning to 1

Thvn wo will all have to mortify

a hit. Last Advent I saved enough 1
out of butcher’s meats for the ser

to go to church in.
That was Lent, madam.
No, it wasn't Lnt. Three or
four of the neighbors' wives wanted

told them it wasn't mine and I lied
