A Timely Warning.
We endorse the following from
lb* Atlanta Constitution, and sug
go*t that onr tinners lead cart,
fully ami ponder its practical sug
gestions:
The lime is ripe for a radical
ebango in our methods of farming
File great majority of onr planters
have an opportunity—the first they
have Lad since the wur—to become
independent ol western pork and
grain dealeis, general local dealers
who stand ready now,as of old, to
exact excessive protits coupled w ith
usurious rates of interest ranging
from 100 to 175 perccuium,This re
sult can only be brought about by
that species of economy which in.
sists that every farm or plantation
shall produce its own supplies.
Upon a farm that is really profita
ble, cotton is a very small item and
small gruiu a very large one.
For that reason, and now while
the season still holds forth an invi
tation,we urge the fanners in every
section of the slate to einphasiz
their prosperity and make them
selves thoroughly the masters ol
the situation by sowing an *bun
dauco of small grain—by planting
largely of oats, and wheat, upd rye,
and barley. These things,and their
result.,nr the very life of the state,
The cotton (lc-luaion ia difficult
to coutcud with after it !ia become,
as in the case of thousands of Geor
gian*, a dixi-OHo; but we have high
hopes of bringing about tome very
surprising euro*. The clulu-nD
consists iu the belief timi 850 re
ceived for u bale of cotton is not
only all dear profit, but that it- is
more and better t money than SSO
paid out for labor, or for western
hay, or for western meat and grain.
This delusion h a brought thou
sands of innocent woman and child
ren to want und wreetcud and , uiti
ed some of the most promising
young men of the stale.
The remedy for all this, and for
marly every other evil that ,carries
the Goorgia farmers in the dire;:
lion of diastir, is to muke tho far*
mil's self-supporting. L ii'ge crops
of small grain put in this full will
still further better tho condition of
our agricultural population.
