THE BLOODY KNIFE.
On Saturday night last one of the
bio odiest affairs occured in the northern
part of the county ever known in this
section. It appears that a large
crowd of colored people had assem
bled on the plantation of Mr. W. T.
Kendrick for the purpose of celebra
ted one of their accustomed “frolics."
When the crowd was at high glee an
gry words arose between some of the
men, licks followed, when soon nearly
the entire male [xirtion of the party
were engaged in a general melee out
of which some of them emerged bad
ly worsted. -Ed. Bryan was cut so
severely that
HE DIED ON SUNDAY,
while Charles Harvey, Charles

I'i'Jio Agricultural CJub
Met at the Court House on Tuesday
j last, C01..T. R. I.umsden.in the chair,
I and Mr. W. T. Dennis acting Secre
tary. The Secretery was requested to
call the attention of the farmers to the
annual election of officers for the So
ciety, which comes off Ist Tuesday
in January, when delegates to the
sessions of the State Agricultural con
vention for 1883, will lie elected.
Dr. Neal made practical remarks as
to labor and cotton production, touch
ing in a progressive manner on the
merit! of intensive farming. Col. T.
R. I.umsden and Hon. W. H. Searcy
participated in the debate.
Cane culture was discussed by Mr.
D. G. Owen, I)r. Neal, W. 11. Searcy,
T. R. I.umsden and others. They all
advocated more attention and better
culture to this important branch of our
industries. The following yields,
among others, were reported ; ,<205
in syrup from three eights of an acre;
350 gollons from half an acre; 84
gallons from about one-eight of an
acre. There are doubtless rttany
farmers throughout the county who
have had quite as satisfactory results
as these.
The subject of "Small Industries,”
to which the Register & Standard
has for years been calling the atten
tion of the people, was referred to by
members, and thought to.be one of
the greatest factors in the problem of
our material resources.
The subject chosen for discussion
at the January meeting is : “The In
tensive System of Farming, and the
Economic Diminution of Cotton Cul-
tercr”
The Lollego Fair and Festival
Is growing in magnitude, and addi
tions to the already 1 ng list of con
tributions are added daily. Messrs.
Davis, Gould it Cos., through their
agents in Talbotton, W. E Williams
& Cos., have kindly donated a fine
buggy, Messrs. Geo. T Rogers' Sons,
Macon, have given one barrel of Wade
Hampton flour, and other no less ap
preciated contributions are coming in
rapidly. The local soliciting commit
tees are having good success, and
the people arc all aroused on tlic sub
ject of Talbotton’s schools.
We may write “su"ces” as the re
sult of the efforts now uemg made to
establish LeVert as one of the most
popular schools in the State.

Something Hare.
Somebody has decorated the walls
of our office with fleecy festons, a
rare production, the staple resembling
cotton. It is thought by a few that
the product will engage much of the
labor and attention of our farmers in
future.
LeVert College
Is now being improved by the placing
of anew shingle roof, while other im

Whatever the cause, don’t

That which is most worthy ot our study
is the history of our own country; and
yet it is a singular fact that our means o;

There is a genuine demand for a Histo

the whole period ot our national career,
from the discovery of the American Con
tinent to the present time, and which
shall not only serve as a woik lor the
general reader, but shall be valuable lor
purposes of reterence and deeper study.
In undertaking to supply the popular
demand lor a book which hull record this
marvellous history, the Publishers deter*
mined to produce a work that should be
worthy of the subject and the occasion.
They aocoidingly placed the work in the
bauds of one of the moat brilliant writers,
renowned statesman and thorough histo
rians in the country—Hon Alexunder H.
Stephens.
This vo’ume is destined to take rank
as tho standard history ol the United
