On Weduesday last was the finrl
contest over the question of fence or
no fence, in Prattsburg district The
vote was close, but on being counted
out, showed a majority of 14 for
stock-law, or no fence.
We think the citizens of that enter

the results of the new law. It cer
tainly has many advantages over the
old team-at-large practice for the
stock.
The supreme court of tne Untied
States will' probab y decide at the
present term the famous case in which
the state of New York, acting for
certain of its citizens, has sued the
state of Louisiana on some of its
repudiated bonds. The bonds were
assigned to the state of New York so
as to enable it to sue an obligation
that would otherwise have come be
fore the state courts of Louisiana.
Such a suit was never contemplated
t>y the framers of the constitution,
and it remains to be seen whether the
courts is prepared to give individuals
access to the treasury of a state under
the guise of a suit m which the suitor
has no tangible interest. If so, shim

The Drawing.
Talbotton has never witnessed as
big a success in any undertaking as
has crowned the management of our
Fair and Festival, which closed on
Thursday night last. The special feat
ure of that night was the drawing, in
which $l5O worth of valuable articles
were disposed of. Good humor pre
vailed, and the merry laugh went
round when some expectant would
draw a ’possum, or a few cakes of
soap. But, of course, all could no l
get the big prizes. Very many arti
cles of value were drawn, among them
two buggies, a Davis sewing machine,
carving sets, a suit of clothes, blankets,
silver-ware, &c. Messrs. J. H. Har
vey and C. H. Weekes, drew the bug
gies, while the sewing machine very
appropriately fell to the lot of Miss
Nettie Mizell.
The drawing was conducted by a
committee of our prominent citizens,
everything being to the satisfaction of
all. The drawing was a big success,
because it has drawn in #750 for Le-
Vert college, and made a great many
people happy.

That whioh i* moat worthy of our study
is tbe history of our own country; hud
yet It is a singular fact that war means oj
obtaining such information is very limited-
Tbe great mass of the American people
have been compelled to depend for '.heir
knowledge ot our history upon th* out
line works intended lor the use ol schools
and whioh by their natnre are brief, de
signed for the comprehension of chil

the adult mind.
There is a genuine demand for a Histo

the whole period of our national career,
from the di-covery of the American Con
tinent to tbe present time, end which
aball not only serve as a woik I t the
gener.il reader, but shall be Tnluable tor
purposes of reference and deepar study.
in undertaking to supply tbe popular
demand lor a book which shall record this
marvellous history, the Publisher* deter
mined to produce a work tbet Should be
worthy of ths subject and tbe occasion.
They accoidingly placed tbe work in the
bands of one of the most brilliantxtritefs,
renowned statesman and Thorough histo
rians ra the country—Hon Alexander H.
Stephens.
This vo'nme is destined to take rank
as the standard history of the OnHed
States, and should bs in tbe Bofcieo of nil
