“This is a free lmll; every man has a

of the party rushod to the fray. Blows
fell thick aud fast. Washburne, of Hli-

among the combatants. At tigs critical'

seized a spittoon. Ho balanced it for a
moment in the air. The objective point
was the head of Barksdulo, of Mississip

his susi>ended missile. Meanwhile, the

his mace—without effcot. It was near

“proceedings” took place.—Philadel

BEARDS.
Exceptionally long beards have always
attracted a good deal of attention, and
history records many instances of this
kind. Rnnber von Tolberg, a Gorman
’Kniglit, and Councillor of Maximilian
IL (d. 1576), rejoiced in a beafrd which
reached to his feet, and from thero again
to his waist. John Mayo, a celebrated
pointer of the sixteenth century, who
accompanied Charles V. in his campaign,
had a beard so long tliat, although ho
was a tall man, it would hung upon the
[-round when ho stood upright; ho wore
it, therefore, fasteued to his girdle.
Oeorgo Killingwortb, sent by Queen
Jlnry as one of hor agents, in 1555, to
Czar Ivan the Terrible, is said to linve
had a beard live feet two inches long.
In the olden time, wbou every part of
the body had its .price, tiie beard was
rained at 20 shillings—a largo sum for
the time—while the loss of u lug wus
only estimated at. 12 shillings.
We can easily imagine that, fat periods
when the beard mid whisker, w ere looked
