ed knife about eighteen inches long
and two and a half inches wide, in the
shape of a sword called machete—im
proved implements scarcely ever
used. Every one that considers him
self a montano (fanner) has one of
these machetes strung at bis side, and
itisa oomioal sight to see a boy with
a machete nearly as big as himself
strung at his side, as all wear them
no matter bow small. Just imagine
youraelf cutting down .a large rye
field with a sickle—you would laugh
at the idea, and, in return, they would
laugh at you chopping grass with a
hoe. They never plow it after it is
planted. The first year the cane is
cut and fed to stock or made seed of,
the second year they begin to grind,
as it improves every year more until
aLout the 9th or 10th year when it
begins to degenerate. It is all owing
to the fertility of the land. It also
stools here a great deal more after the
third or fourth year. It leaves its fur
rows and becomes a complete cane
break. The cane has fifteen to seven
teen degrees of sweetness. Before
the war there were a great many
plantations that began grinding the
first of December until May, never
regarding Sunday or night, as it was
» continual grinding until done, only
stopping for repairing. Average en
gines used ia thirty horse power,
grinding six acres of cane daily, not
such cane as yon have in Liberty, but
cane that will average from eighteen
to twenty feet long and three and a
half inches in diameter. The process
of reducing the juice to sugar is done
by evaporation, much improvement
on the old way of boiling. The fuel
used for oooking the juice is the bag
asse (the cane that is loft after the
juice is squeezed out), which is hauled
to the yard from the rollers to dry,
and in course of a few. hour* it ia
hauled to the furnace then ready for
use. Tho bagasse contains a great
deal of alohohol, which makes it very
nrdent and an excellent substitute for
wood, as wood is very scarce in this
country.
Each caba leria (a land measure
ment of about thirty-five acres) will
yield from ninety to one hundred
hogshoads of sugar, hogshead weigh
ing from 1,250 to 1,500 pounds and
sold at six cents per pound. You can
form an idea from this how the lands
produce in Cuba. From the shim
mings tho best of rum is made equal
to any alcohol, and sold at one dollar
per gallon. The government impos
es a special tax ol eight dollars per
pipe (63 gallons) and on sugar six
dollars per hogshead.
''Pleasant day," said the girl, com
ing for him before he could get his
tongue unkinked. “Most bewildering
day, isn’t it?”
“Ye-yes, miss” stammered the
tools used principally is a long blad- drummer. He was in the habit of
playing pitcher in this kind of match,
and the position of catcher didn’t fit
him as tightly as his pantaloons.
“Nice weather for traveling,” con
tinued the- girl, “much nicer than
when it was cold. Are yon perfectly
comfortable ?”
“Ob, yes, thanks,” murmured the
drummer.
“Glad of it,” resumed the girl
cheerfully. “You don’t look so. Let
me put my shawl under your head,
won’t you ? Hadn’t you rather sit
next to the window, and have me de
scribe the landscape to you?”
“No, please,” he muttered, “I—I’m
doing well enough.”
Can I buy you some peanuts, or a
book ? Let me do something to make
the trip happy! Suppose I slip my
arm around your waist 1 Just lean
forward a trifle so I can 1”
You’ll—you’ll have to excuse me
gasped the wretched drummer. “I
don’t think you really mean it 1”
•‘You look so tired,” she pleaded.
“Wouldn’t you like to rest your head

it deftly. “At the next station I’ll get

at our destination yon’ll let me call

But she settled back contontedly
all the same, and at a convention of
drummers, held in the smoker that
morning, it was unanimously resolved
that her seat was engaged, so far as
they were concerned, for the balance
of the season.

As I sat on the hotel steps at Dal

from Cincinnati, the landlord came
oat asked us if we wanted to see a
man who was carrying six bullets
about with him. Of course we did,
and we walked down to the other end
of the veranda and were introduced
to Col. B, I was going to approach
him leisurely, bat the hasty drummer
rushed right at him with:
“So you are carrying six ballets
about with you, eh?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Do they pain you much ?”
“Obi no.”
“Lands alive 1 but I don’t see how

“Eighteen.”
“Did you get all these ballets at
one time?”
“Yes, all at once. You want to
know where they are located.”
“Exactly—exactly. ”
“I’m carrying ’em in this pocket to
day,” was the quite reply, as he fish

lets picked off the battlefield. The
drummer was so mad about it that he
wouldn’t eat any supper.
