A Simple Explanation of the v.hj*' inuf
minuting Gns Is Made.
Bow few people can intelligibly explain
some of tlio most ordinary tilings in
every day life., An official of the city
gas works was heard to say. not long ago
that if lie might judge by the number of
times he was asked for information, not
moro than two people in ten know
how common illuminating gas is made.
They nil shorn to 'understand, ho said,
tiiat it comes out of soft coal, but they
nro ignorant, of the process by which it is
extracted. Wo do not doubt this at all,
for it is tho common tilings that wo nro
apt to overlook in our search for infor
mation.
Now, let us give you a simple explana
tion of gas making. Break up a pieco of
bituminous coal into small fragments and
. fill the bowl of n clay tobacco pipe with
them. Cover tho mouth of the bowl
with wet clay and then thoroughly dry
it. Put the bowl of tho pipe into a fire
where it will get red hot, and you will
soon see a yellowish smoko come out of
tho stem, and if you touch a light to tho
smoko it will burn brightly, for it is
nothing moro or less than the gas from
the coal.
You can purify and collect this gas in
a simple way. Fill a botSo with water
and turn it upside down in a bowl of
water. You know the water will not
run out of tho bottlo because tho air pres
sure on tho water in tho bowl will pre
vent It. Put tho end of the pipo stem
under tho mouth of tho bottle, and tho
gas will bubble up through the water into
tho bottle, gradually displacing tho water,
and if tho pipo were largo enough to
mako a great deal of gas the bottlo would
he entirely idled with it. *
You havo seen the immense quantities
of coko which they havo at tho gas -
works; that is what is left of the coal
after the gas has been burned out of it.
Coko fa carbon, only a small part of what
was in the .coal having gone of! with the
gas. Take tho cloy covering oiT your
pipo and you will And tho bowl tilled
with this coke.
Now, that fa precisely tho way gas is
made in large quantities at the gas works. I
Instead of .pipo bowls they use big re
torts, and these aro heated red hot
furnace, for tho firo must bo outside of
tho retorts. Heating coal red hot i:
closed retort is different from burning it
in tho open air. A largo pipo from tho
retort carries off the product of tho coal,
consisting of steam, tar, air and ammo
nia, os well as gas. Tlio ammonia and
the tar go into tanks, and tho gas into
coolers, and then over lime, which take3
up the acids in it into tho immenso iron
gas holders which you havo seen at tho
works.
Theso holders aro'open at tho bottom,
and stand, or rather swing, in tanks of
water, being adjusted by means of
weights. jVs tho gas comes into them
they rise up out of the water, but tlio
bottoms nro always submerged, bo that
the gas cannot escape. Tho largo gas
pipes, or mains os they aro called, con
nect with the holders and conduct tho
gas through tho streets to tho houses
whero it is used. Tho pressuro fa given
to tho gas by tlio weight of tho iron hold
ers, which aro always bearing down on
tho gas they contain.

flow to Live Long.
Milk fa not always admirable as a din-
ner drink, especially when fish plays any
part in tho menu. Tea or coffee taken
with meat fa simply suicidal. Those hot
beverages turn tho mcab-into something
resembling leather, and tho result inter-
feres sadly with digestion. Tho man who
desires long lifo must not givo a placo to
“high tea” in his daily programme. Of
tea itself it can only b • said that it fa
harmless if not taken too often or inado
too strong. The American lady who
after several calls' and u cup of tea at
each remarked that she could ••always
worry down another cup” was prolmbly
unaware of the mischief she was doing
herself. No one need totally abstain
from tea if thoy only take the precaution
to buy it good, not to make it strong, not
to let it infuse long, never to take it
more than twice a day and to abjure it
after 5 in the afternoon.
Tho morning tub is indispcnsablo to all
who wish to live a long and healthy life..
It fa truo that thcro havo lieen centena
rians who have known nothing of this
luxury, but their longevity lias been iu
spite of that fact, i because of it. Tlio
bath is good, hut not too much Imth.
Walking is good, but it must not lie over
done. Dickons ovrdid it. Most of us,
hqwever, underdo it, and scarcely walk
enough. Flesh accumulates iqiou us in
middlo ago bccauso we do not take suffi
cient exercise, and then we give up long
walks becauso wo are stout and eonse-
qtlently lazy, thus reversing tho process
of cause and effect. Tho health suffers
seriously, and a way is opened to many
maladies.—Cor. London News.

“The late Professor Proctor was ono of

“Mrs. Proctor received callers only

Every afternoon Mr. Proctor took an
