Peculiarities of tlio Alntu.
Inasmuch as there ere no family
names, no village, tribal, or national
rights to bo respected, there is nothin"
approximating to father light or
mother right. Or perhaps it would be
more exact to say that, inasmuch as
women arc only_recognized as servants
throughout their whole lives, and as
mothers as soon as they hare reached
the propel' age, the personality of the
whole family is sunk in that of the
husband and father while *bo lives.
When he dies ho i3 at once and ubso
lutely forgotten, and each surviving
member of his family pursues an en
tirely separato course, in no way con
cerning himself about the ethers. If
a man dies and leaves a family of in
fant children, tho care of them de
volves upon tho mother until tho
oldest son reaches tho ago of about 18;
then ho becomes tho head of tho
family. Feuialo inheritance is utterly
unkno wn, ns would lie expected in a
society wherein women havo no rights
at all. If u man is so unfortunate as
to leavo no truo heir, or so careless ns
not to havo adopted one, his property
goes to his next younger brother, or
nis nearest male relative, if bo havo no
brothers cither by birth or adoption.—

Citizen Train’s Astonishing Discovery.
One reason why world is so upsido
down is from tho astounding error in
“Cosmos Chronology.” If Jan. 1
Anno Domini was first day of First
century, end of twelfth month, Dec.
31, at midnight, ended first hundred
years. If correct, Jan. 1, 1800, was
first day of Eighteenth century, and
yet for eighty-eight years wo havo
been calling it Nineteenth century,
when that does not begin till J:. '. 1,

The Oath of Hippocrates.
A correspondent sends us the Hippo

My Poor Back!
That “poor back” is held responsible for more than it* share of the sufferings of
mankind. If your dog bites a man who kicks it, do you blame the dog ? On the same
principle the kidneys utter their protest

The Origin of Names.
Many explanations havo been given
of the origin of the present ugly name
of “Rotten Row,” the fashionable drive
in Ilydo p.irk, but this is tho most
likely one: it was onco tho Route do

The Indians of Guiana have a enri-

Thus, when they reach five, instead of
saying so, they call it a hand, ai:; is

being “four hands,” is a “man.”
Forty is “two men,” and thus they go

as “two men, a hand aud first finger.”

ltlillio Streams That Vanish.
One of tho peculiar features of Idaho
scenery is the frequent occurrence of
dark rocky chasms and channels of
lava into which streams and rivers
plunge and are apparently forever lost.
These fissures are supposed to bo old
lava beds. Tho outside of tho molten
mass cooled and formed a roof, tho
fiery stream below became exliausted,
leaving an empty chamber. A break
in this roof having occurred, an open
ing was formed into which tho river
