THE RECORD OF SERVICE
Rep. Carl Vinson is the dean of the Georgia delegation in
Congress. His record of service to his district, state, and country
covers a period of 32 years, and there are few men in either house
with longer tenure. Under the seniority rule he has occupied for a
number of years key positions in the Congress.
Through the wealth of experience of over three decades and
through important committee assignments, Carl Vinson is out
standing among the members of Congress.
Without queston he ranks among the top 10 influentail men in
that body of 435 men of influence, pressure and opinion.
He stands today at the pinnacle of his distinguished career.
The Sixth District of Georgia is represented by a man known and
respected by his colleagues in Washington and by the nation at
large.
The matter of retaining his services, however, rest not upon
them but with us, the constituents of his districts. He has an
nounced for re-election and the measuring-stick of our choice will
fall not upon long tenure in office but squarely upon his record as
a Congressman.
That record has few equals in the history of the American
Congress. As Chairman of the powerful Committee on Naval Af
fairs he has for nearly 20 years directed, prodded, scolded, assisted
the United States Navy to its position as the greatest sea force in
the history of the world.
Top Admirals of the Fleet have swapped the command at fre
quent intervals, Secretaries of the Navy have come and gone under
many administrations.
The ballast of that organization has rested in no small measure
upon the sure hand of the Chairman of the House Committee on
Naval Affairs. He has been the civilians’ chief checkmate on the
pocketbook and the Navy’s staunchest friend.
His important duties during the war were discharged with
distinction, and his foresight on the security of the nation proved
For many years he called for the fortification of Pacific outposts,
especially Guam, and championed the unheeded demand of the
Navy for an invigorated force.
To the nation he has performed his duties with efficiency and
wisdom.
To his constituents, Carl Vinson has been loyal; as a public
servant of the Sixth District he has long since established his fair
ness, honesty and ability. He is no less able to serve today than he
was in years past. His record of service is merely enhanced by his
years of experience and established position.
State Rep Harvey Roughton, of Washington County, an
nounced some weeks ago that he would oppose Mr. Vinson in the
coming election.
To date there has been no charge that he has not done his job
well. The idea seems to be that 32 years in Congress is long
enough, and perhaps Rep. Roughton is the man to take over.
Brother Roughton was for a number of years, Minister of the
Gordon Methodist Church. He is highly respected in this county as
a gentleman of sincerity and integrity. His friends here have been
pleased with his service in the legislature from a sister county, but
many of them feel that his decision to oppose Rep. Vinson is ex
tremely unfortunate and ill-advised.
Aside from his highly handicapped position as a candidate,
any attempt, by him, to discredit the record and ability of Carl
Vinson, would more than offset what publicity of dubious value he
receives from the campaign and would leave many of his old
friends here, the single choice of opposing him in the effort.
