Educational Campaign
Urged In Behalf Os Trees
“Trees cannot vote, otherwise
more attention would be paid to
their welfare,” is the sage obser
vation of the Bryson City (N.C.)
Times, which in a recent issue
went on to say:
“Since trees cannot vote some
one must speak for them. To
voice their cause is to speak
for the economic future of the
country.”
“We live under a government
of political parties. The law
maker has been put in his posi
tion by the votes of a political
party. He is therefore anxious
to please those voters. He can
do so only when he gets an ex
pression of opinion from
them.”
“This is why a campaign of
education must be carried on
constantly in behalf of trees.”’
Forest fire prevention, forest
conservation, proper forestry
practices and tree planting are
vital factors in the U. S. Victory
Pulpwood Campaign.
There is an urgent need for
more top quality pulpwood by
mills in this region NOW.

School Boys Asked To Save
Red-headed Peckerwood
•
School boys of this area are
being asked to help save the red
headed peckerwood from total
extinction, it is stated in an ap
peal sent here by the Southern
States Forestfire Commission,
Inc.. Birmingham, 5, Alabama.
“rhe peckerwood, because of
his red head, has been the target
for millions of hunters, and un
less shooting of this valuable
wild bird is checked it will be
come more extinct like the famed
whistling swan. The pecker wood
is one of the most valuable
friends to timber growers, as he
is like the sap sucker, feeds on
tree borers and other harmful in
sects”, the statement avers.
“Futhermore, he is the most
business-like and industrious of
all the feathered friends For in
stance, in digging a nest in an
old tree, he is never late for his
‘shift’.’’
“He uses his head in building
his home and digging out the
enemies of trees, but the red-top
on his crown gets the eye of
careless shooters”, the statement
concludes.
