The t ump Meeting,
At Murvin, in the northern part of this
comity, closed on Tuesday last. Since
the first camps were erected and the arbor
imilt and consecrated to God, more than
forty years ago; we have no fears in assert
ing that no meeting there, has ever been
attended by an abler corps of ministers.
The lleV. Mr. Anthony, of Americas, Itcv
Mr. Histrnnk, of Fort Valley, Rev. Mr.
Austin, of Tbomasvilie, the Presiding El
der. Itev. Mr. McGehee, of Thomasville, j
and the Rev. Mr, Dawsey, of Berien, w<*re !
the Visiting brethren. The other minis- '
ters were onr own, The Revs. Messrs.
Talley, Lewis, the pastor at Quitman;
Giles, Hinted, the Circuit rider; Mr. Red
dick, locaL There were other ministers,
some of whose names we never knew, and
others we don't now remember. The audi
ence was large, particularly on Saturday
and Sunday the preaching was able and im
pressive, and though, there was but little
excitement, we think deep and lasting im
pressions were made. The members of
the church were revived, and with them
the meeting may truthfully be said to be
a good one. We have visited camp meet
ings all of our life, but have never wit
nesged such an wholesale imposition as
was practiced upon some of the tent-hold
ers. If their benovoleuce had not been
boundless, and their patience inexhansta
ble, they would have locked their tents
and sought for refuge at their quiet
homes. Hut to the last they fed the
multitudes, and there appealed to be an
nnwasting fullness of supplies. It is one
of the most hospitable, whole sotiled
Christian communities in the State of
Georgia, notwithstanding their unprece
dented liberality, they are independent
and prosperous. They have fine lands,
lovely climate, good water, splendid health
and abundant crops. These are God’s
blessings, and such communities, though
seldom found, are always thus blessed.. —
To every one of the tent holders we are
indebted for their hospitality to ns, and
we tender to them our hearty thanks.

One John Martin, alius Ed Hagan, was j
arrested by Mr. John Thruster, Sheriff of
onr county, charged with stealing a horse!
from Mr. Hugh Mclntyre, of Thomasville. j
Tliis same negro hud once been arrested
by Sheriff Luke, of Thomas county, but
made his escape and located in Brooks; as j
soon as his whereabouts was assertained the
proper process was sent to Mr. Thrasher,
who with M. B. Young and B. C. Pollard,
arrested him in George Hay's barbershop
The prisoner went quietly along until they
reached the corner of Judge Bealy's yard, ;
on the street leading to the jail, when he j
grasped the arm of Sheriff Thrasher in j
which lie held his pistol, uttering fearful
and bitter oaths, and in the scuffle sue- j
ceeded in wresting the pistol from Mr. T. 's j
hand, but lie soon recovered it, but the |
prisoner fought with brutal determination, j
neither asking or giving quarters, It was j
not the wish or desire of the Sheriff or his j
assistants to kill the negro, but the inevi- j
table alternative was to kill him or permit
him to do whatever violence lie chose to
their persons and make his escape. But
in this instance he was confronting an in
vincible trio, and while the negro was ,
fighting with brntal fury, Mr. Thrasher
used a little sulphurious logic, and the se
i quence was his physical barometer very
soon indicated cool weather.
A jury of inquest was regularly empan
! neled by Justice Avery, acting Coroner,
! and after a thorough investigation the fol
! lowing verdict was rendered:
‘•While we deeply deplore the necessity
of taking the life of a man under any cir
i cumstances, we believe it will be a saluta
ry lesson to the living; the laws of the
country must be vindicated, and violators
must learn that officers of the law cannot
I be resisted with impunity, and they must
1 further learn that alt gqod will
j sustain the officers.” “Thrasher did right
