We have wanted to say it for a long time; and, yet, we hesitated. We
hesitated, because we realized what an easy thing it is to ‘‘jump on” a
public service corporation, and how often complaints are lodged against |
them that are not always well founded. We preferred to wait; in the hope!
that all cause for complaint against the local telephone service would be,
in time, removed. We have waited, and waited—and all the time the com-l
plaints have become more numerous. Justly so. too. It is putting it con-1
servativcly to say tlat Augusta's telephone service is not what it should 1
be.
“We do not know what is the matter, hut we do know that something
is the matter—and that it should be remedied. We do not know whether
our present troubles are due to a reduction of torce, to placing too much
work on one operator, or to incompetent help or what; but we do know
that the waits, mistakes and annoyances incidental *o the use of the tele
phone in this community have grown worse, instead of better.

the interior, along the creek bottoms,
in the coves and narrow valleys, on the
less precipitious mountain sides, away
from railroads, turnpikes, churches
and school houses—all that makes for
progress and betterment—live a cabin
home people, whose condition is truly
deplorable.
The one room cabin lighted by the
open door, a split bottom chair or two.
a rude home made beii, a few cooking
utensils constitute the furniture. ;Earlv
marriages and large families are the
rule. Poverty is evident everywhere.
Tillable land is scarce, the little corn
crops (worked generally by the women
and girls as well as the men,) a few
hogs, some sheep (if the man is very
thrifty.) with apples and peaches
(Wherever an orchard or a few trees
have planted,) constitute the living re
sources for these cabin people.
Can we give them a good system of
schools, with practical industrial depart
ments and positive religious influence
and teaching. It is through the school
the people are to be reached. We have
seen the wisdom of John Knox, when he
undertook tho reformation of Scotland,
he placed a school house besides every
church.
Using Miss Bennett’s expression,
“Let us illuminate some of the dark
corners.”
Young People.
It is, earnestly desired the young
people have a part in this work, having
a program at the beginning or the
close of the week using literature that
will inform them of the needs.
Sunday's Sermon.
The collection on tho following Sun
day will go to this great work, that the
men may have an opportunity of help
ing hundreds of splendid boys and girls,
it will also be a means of enriching
their lives in this world an 1 allowing
[them to’Wy some treasures in Heaven.
• It is a privilege for ut to have this op-
