A French writer has been making
Investigations as to what, in the
opinion of women of various national.
Hies, constitutes th" Ideal husband.
'i he fair American professed her
self satisfied with her countrymen,
as regards their devotion and money
making proclivities, but. lamented
their lack of romance and Idealism.
On the necessity for her husband
being a congenial friend and com
panion, the Frenchwoman laid great
est emphasis, while the German Frau
desired above all things, good tem
per and an Infinite capacity for stay
ing by Ills own flieslde.
The Spanish lady demanded love
primarily; while the Russian voted
for a husband who would understand
her.
It is strange that none of these wo
men demanded | n their husbands
what Is really of paramount import
ance—viz., principle, and a fine sense
of honor. The cavalier who said;
"1 had not loved thee, dear, so much
Loved I not honor more;"
was really voicing a profound truth,
and the love of a man who does not pos
sess this quality is not worth having.
The woman who marries such a man
has little chance of real lasting hap
piness.
There are two kinds of men whom
the wise woman should flee from as
front a pestilence—‘the fussy and the
flirtatious. All romance, all realism,
all good humor and comradeship fade
away in the presence of the man
whom a fleck of du'st fills with fury,
and lo whom a book nr cushion out
of order is as a red rag to a bull.
i The husband who is continually hav
ing "little love affairs" is likewise an
unenviable possession. He may pos-
Bibiy be, in his own way, quite "charm
Ing" (as Maggie -Wylie would say),
but his wife's lot is "not a happy
one."
: Every now and again (in the silly
season), the great mind of the Rrltish
public Is exercised as to whether hus
bands should obey their wives, or
wives their husbands. Perfect rquali-
Ity is the Ideal, and If there is any
masterfulness at all, it should Un
doubtedly be on the side of the hus
band.
| Some husbands are the bond slaves
of their wives. They spend their time
in fetching and carrying. In matching
ribbons and silks at shops. In button
ing gloves , boots and blouses. In
handing round bread and butter at tea
parties and In various other ways
making themselves uxorlousty utili
tarian. Such a husband Is useful, but
be is not inspiring
| There are gome wives who order
their husbands about in a manner
th3t no self-respecting flunkey would
to|( rate for a moment. "He that has
a wife hns a master," says the Scot
tish proverb, and many men realize
the poignant truth of the saying when
alas! It Is too late.
| It Is a man's own fault, however.
If he Is relegated to a secondary po- j
sltlon In his household. Even in these |
days of strong-minded women and !
1 ottffragettes the man who Is Incapable
of maintaining ift least a position of
j equality must be either u coward or
|a comedian.
