"We knew It would rain, for all the
morn,
A spirit on slender robes of ralat
Was lowering Its golden buckets
down
Into the vapory amethyst."
Did you ever know what It means
lo be without rain and wafer? Where
the hills are parched, the branches
til dry and unending dust greets one
ot every side? The awful vastnei*
of the thing cannot be realized uo-
lcfs one Is in the midst of such a ca
lamity wltn never a drop of water In
sight. Homebody has written back
, y mder about water, water every-
vine and not a drop to drink, but It
ert.t never compare with the stretch
of the desert. It can't measure up to
the wild Imaginings of the disordered
and distorted mind when there Is
nothing in sight. The very thought

Its gleam more glorious than tbs
sparkle of the most cholco of earthly
Jewels. On the dew-sprinkled gooea-

water, almost atoms, seem to be
gifts from a divine hand end no treas
ure of earth could buy them from the
man adrift and thirsty.

pitiable of all sections of earth and
wnere the ouses are found the bless

p>ol, and you have taken away the
charm. During the past three months
the glcrlcug old state of my nativity,
of course that’s Georgia, has been
divested of the wonderful tribute of
a bountiful rainfall and In many sec-
dons dire distress has been occasion
ed by the lack of water. Branches
have run dry, pastures made barrtn,
glass withered, and while the glorl-
us weather has enabled the people
■-) do an Immense amount of work,
i.lll there has been something lack
ing, an aching void, as it were, to be
Ailed and only tne wonderful rain can
accomplish the feat of supplying that
which man is powerless to cope with
tii nature.
But with the Christmas time anc
the wonderful New Year there is
something to supply the things that
human nature demands along with
Its taste and desires. Th.; good cheer
hat predominates at this season Is
evivlng within Itself and the culy
pity of It Is that there are so many
nomes where the expression of good
will Is smothered and the best there
Is In life Is kept down, hampered, so
o speak, by the trend of clrcum-
itanceg over which those at stake
mve no control. If It were not so
that better provisions could be made
would not be so bad, but where
love could reign as k'tig and kindness
could be monarch over It all and still
he spirit of the season Is lacking
here Is something worse than thirst.
It Is the mental desire for the things
hat ure highest and noblest. It Is the
longing for sometljing which ran nev
er he nttalned.
There arp a lot of folk In this wide
world who never know, nor ran they
ri allze, the vastness of this desert of
life, where human pain Is nil that
breaks the monotony of the other In
describable features of existence un
der the clreumstancps. The mom-
sorrowful the thing grows Is measur
ed by the awful thought that sorao-
bi dv Is generally responsible for this
state of affairs and somebody could
probably hell) it If they would try.
it Is worse when there Is always
somebody eternally nagging a, the
people who try In make life better.
There Is hardly any measure of pun
ishment great enough to fill the cav
erns rf sorrow hollowed out In other
people’s lives and no man ought to
wish any one harm. But there are
times that try men's souls when It Is
known that there are folks striving
o tear down the bases of nil the best
hlnes of life, endeavoring to destroy '
he fsbrlc from which the best lives
ire woven and from whl-h the warp
ind the roof of the nation Is formed.
And yet back over the centuries for
nearly two thousand years there
comes the music that will not be
Milled. There Is still In the star the
radiant beams of hope, there Is yet
on earth tne tidings of good wl'l and
'here Is alwavs somebody lcnglng to
grant you Godspeed when vou trv to
do your best, even If you fail. This
Is the thought that ought to be up
permost, It Is the one that should
predominate. All through ibe.se long
years the way has been rough and
stony, the pathway strewn with
tnorrB, but here and mere tne now.
»rs have bloomed, sometimes In win
ter like It was 'he glorious soring
Imp In some tropical country. These
'hlnps soften the harshness of the
others, they sweeten the bitterness of
experience.
And then there’s love! un, wnat n
winder working thing It is, and how
strong It grows day by day. It light-
ins the burden and strengthens the
weak arm. It gives hope to the faint
and courage to the cowardly. 1
reckon on the whole that Christ was
sent to do something like that and
after the creeds have been exhausted
in an effort to find something that
tends towards cementing the broth
erhood of man. all the sages and the
philosophers will some dav droop
'heir heads In hopeless despair and
when they awake front their reveries
hev'll see the Christmas star shining
above them, the story of the Lord's
love revealed to them, the hope of a
New Year extended to them, and
then they’ll turn with me noeord to
retrace tnelr footsteps and tell the
world the old. old story, that grows
more glorious with the flight of time.
So, In this belief I wish you all a
most glorious, bright and merry
Christmas and a happy and prosper-
vus New Year.—Inland Tanner.
