Level plantation in Dougherty county,
is refreshing. Mere is a i»« with
Maas. The chances are a hundred to
one that Mil Fort will not only -get
pure water for his employees, bat
water that will flow in abundance, even
for purposes of irrigation and to ran
his cotton gin, and also .find himself
ettrcmsrt as a public benefactor.
The source, of Flint river to the
west of AtUuiaaie about six hundred
feet above the level of Dougherty coun
ty Waia-r runs down hill, whether on
the surface or beneath it; from the
! u-mu,t.iits to the sea, when not ob-
' M noted or deflected by impervious
j and unfavorable dip. Aa the tertiary
i formation of Southwest Georgia over-
; lies the secondary and primary forma-
1 tinns uf the up country, and is at the
! same lime several hundred feet lower,
' dip is moot Carmable, and it is highly
| improbable that them is any interven
ing impervious stratum,
j It i< |u>ssible, however, that the
i water nay oink to a depth that would
nuke it expensive to secure a flowing
‘ well, bat this is hardly probable,
j The geological formation about tbe
; bead waters of the Flint is primaiy.
I An artesian well would be an iapoari-
bility^there. The foothills of this pri
mary formation, in the western part of
the State are cov- r.sl by a secondary or
cretaceous forms tion, which diverge*
from eastern Alabama,- crosses the
Chattahoochee at and above and ;beIow
Columbus and runs up to Bibb coun
ty. All of the foot hills of this creta-
evous formation are overlapped by the
tertiary of the region south of them
Therefore, two chances for artesian
Wells exist in the counties of Lee,
Dougherty, Calhoun and adjacent conn-
fry. First, from the water sinking in
the primary formation above mention
ed; second, from the water percolating
the earth in the cretaceous formation
between Macon and the Chattahooche.
The latter would be found at a lesser
depth than the former, and the water
may not raise to the surface, nor be as
free from mineral impregnation.
Artesian wells can be had m all pied
mont regions of the world, having a
ximiltr geological formation to ours, so
far as is known; and it is not likely that
our region is an exception.
But for the parsimeny of our legisla
tures wc would have a State geologist to
whom Mr. Fort and others could go for
information itp >n this and similar sub
jects.
Thu material interests of the State,
tho welfare ami prosperity of the peo
ple tire left to (he people; but whether
AlftcU or Thomas shall he Governor
(for the moat part a matter that con
cerns only Alfred anti Thomas) raises a
stir among legislators and politicians,'
who go lustily and bravely to woik and
snvc the State,
In the meantime water from the
granite hills of upp<-r Georgia would
be a very pleasant thing to lave ; and
much interest is being nianiicsted in
Mr.'Fort's project, and his success will
1m- bailed with pleasure.
