The thirteen- year locusts hare ap
peared in Georgia in the following
years: 1803. 1816, 1826. 1842, 1855,

appear simultaneously this year.
It has been intimated that if Conk-

for Roscoe to boss.
Ms. Jay Gould thinks there is a ma
nta, a disease, for investing in railway
properties, which is breeding a serious
financial crisis. There is no way of
stopping iUtithc country is too big for
: that. He never stems any tides, he
•ays, “but drifts along with the crowd,
keeping as near the shore as possible.”
In conversation with a staunch Re
publican the other day, he said to the
writer: “No matter what turn affairs
may yet take in the Conkling matter,
the breach in our party can never be
haaled.’’ The gentleman who thus
•poke expressed entire sympathy for
Conkling as against Garfield.
Pack ill accouuU Texas is benefit
ing immensely by tho railroad “boom.”
In that State thers are 2,000 mile* of
railroad in process of construction, and
6,000 miles projected. The Gould
combination has invested 13,000,000 In
the Stato; and Is now constructing 752
miles <>! now road.. The Missouri Pa.
eifle extension alone has occasioned an
outlay of abont (2,000,000. The de
mand for railroad laborers has been so
pressing, and the wages offered have
been to tempting, that farmers find*
themselves deserted by their field
bauds.
A special telegram from Eufaula
under date of tho 9th, states that a
moat villainous outrage was committed
upon • respectable white girl, twelve
years old, by Josh Shorter, a negro,
near city, on Wednesday afternoon
A diligent pursuit by a large party re
sulted in his capture across the river in
- Georgia. He was immediately earned
to the Alabama side, and upon the
Sheriff’s attempting to get possession
of him, they hurried him hack to Geor
gia with a large crowd and hung him
to a limb of a largo tree, abont midway
between Eufaula and Georgetown.
The Eu.anla Tima • makes the an
nouncement that the Louisville and
Nashville Road now controls the Cen
tral R.R. of Georgia; and states the
heavy rise to (1.70 in the price of Cen
tral stock was brought abont by the
demand for it by'the L. AN. The
Tima says that in a short while the
Road will change hands, the LkX.
taking possession of the property; and
that in all probability Hr. Wadley will
become President of the entire corpo
ration. We do not know that there h>
anything in this statement, hot one
thing is evident—then is remarkable
harmony existing between the Centisl
and the L. A S.i and something hit
stimulated the price of stock.

imprudent enough, under poculisr cir-

a spontaneous defilement. Wo have
always carafully avoided any collision
with this skunk, heretofore, for reasons
which are well understood by every
journalist of refinement and respecta
bility on the Georgia Press, and regret
exceedingly tho circumstances which
led us outside the path of rectitude
this time. It is hardly necessary for
us to add that the skunky subject of

ter material. But read what "O. P.
W.” has to My:
In two respects Southwest Geoigia is
exceedingly fortunate, if it tike, but
little to place a section of country in
that condition—in its wire-grass and
pine trees; in other things it is sadly
defioient Wire-grs»s is worth bnt
itttle or nothing; and if the pine tim
ber serves tny purpose, except sup
plying a few tnrpentino distilleries
with a little rosin, beyond that of an
old field pine in Middle Georgia, the
writer is entirely unconscious of the
(act. The soil, as any one will readily
concede, and tho fact is satisfactorily
established by the testimony its natu
ral growth bears, is far from fertile. In
justice let it be said tbit it is adapted
to quite a variety of fruits and field-
crops; but, at the same time, nothing
is produced in superabundance, and all'
productions are of inferior quality,
with aitonisbing few exceptions. Cat
tle and abeep number largely; but are
invariably found to be of the scrub va
riety, os they receive but little atten
tion and much less food. It would be
out of piece to dilate upon the hog as
nearly all people have heard or the
“Piney Woods hog” until a fac simile
representation of the genuine animal is
now pictured in tpc imagination of
every one. It grows smell and tough,
works diligently for a livelihood and
dies very early in life. Running
streams aro seldom seen, and there is
no such thing as water good for drink
ing purposes. Sterling qualities of
mind or heart are not appreciated as
they should be; and, as an inevitable
consequence, there is but little genn-
ine worth in education and religion,
and without these no people can pros-
per, this section is sadly deficient So
cially it is an absolute bankrupt years
behind this progressive ago in which
itiaour furtitno to live. That people
may not be infatuated by potishsd, ex
aggerated accounts of Southwest Geor
gia, and be induced to abandon attrac
tive, comfortable homes elsewh.ere ex
pecting to find better ones in this over
estimated section, the assertions con
tained in this brief article are made
without any prejudice whatever, and
and facts unclouded by even a shadow
of doubt can be given to sustain the
truth of every syllable.
“O. P. W." has darkly pictured the
darker side, and falsified it by failiog
to give the facts as they are, to say
nothing of bit being uuge nerous enough
to ignore everything that makes our
section at all favored. Tho “wire-
grass” of which ho speaks feeds thous
ands of cattle through the winter, and
fattens them for market in tho spring
time and summer. It grows more
wool than all the other grosses in
Georgia combined, and makes the
towns of Southwest Georgia the prin
cipal wool markets of the Stato. The
•‘pine trees” of Southwest Georgia are
furnishing !,000,000 feat of lumber per
Jay to tho markets of the world, and
tHus yielding about $15,COO per day.
The soil produces a greater diversity
of fruits and crops than any section of
the globe, and when properly attend
ed, products in- superabundance corn,
cotton, rice, peas, potatoes and sugar
cane. Some of our. more industrious,
attentive and provident farmers arc
raising hogs .of the finest stock, and the
“plqey woods hog” needs only care
and attention to make it equal to any.
Surely “O. P. W.” has been closely
cabined or shaded, for he rays that in
Southwest Georgia “running streams
are seldom soon.” Has heloit sight of
tho majestic Chattahoochee with its
thousand tributaries? The pictu
resqua Flint, with its never-failing
stream;, the Aiapaha, Ochlockonee,
Withlacoochee andSatilla rivors ? Has
his disordered liver caused bio to
forego the pleasures of enjoying a
sight of the always-flowing Einchifoo-
nee, Muckalce, Colawabee, Kiokcr,
Spring; Pachith, TV Tjr, Piscola, Gum,
and hundreds of other creeks too nu
merous here to mention ? Has he
compounds that are at this time in gen
eral use, and nearly all hare proved
more or leee efficient as insecticides,
while now it is more a question of price
and aimpticity of application, which
may be advantageously discussed.
Every intelligent planter knows that
genuine Paris green may be applied in
suspension or-id powder, thoroughly
mixed in flour, plaster, wood ashes,
cotton seed meal or other like material
harmless to the plant, with a small por
tion of rosiu, dextrine or gum erabic, used
for adhesive purposes, but the high
commercial value of the green places
it entirely beyond tho reach of planters
in moderate means. The atsonic of
commerce has been extensively need
among, the large planters, but they have
each season to test its strength, edjust
the quantity and vary the method of
application, with uncertain results. In
the hands of those who have not mat
tered these points it is an unsafe reli
ance, and may damage or kill the pUnt
at the sgme time that it destroyed the
worms.
The writer states that last year Prof.
Riley advised him to try “London pur
ple,” on hie plantation, which he did
with most satisfactory results, when
tint state of weather wonld admit of an
effectual application. He states tliat it in
no way impairs the brightness of the
fibre; “Paris green” is also recommend
ed by the correspondent. He presents
the following as tho approved quanti
ties of etch to be used, ete.: Of Paris
green, one ponnd; cotton-worm de
stroyer, half-pound; of araenic of com
merce, from one and a-half to two
pounds, depending upon its strength
and purity; of London purple, from
onc-balf to one-fourth of a pound, de
pending upon the condition of the
weather; all to about forty gallona of
water, and will, if carefully sprayed
and fully atomized, satisfy one acre of
cotton. - These quantities aro only
strictly applicable to the younger
broods of worms; if half grown it re
quires a larger quantity, and to the full
grown even a greater dose still, a simi
lar discrepancy as applied to poiseM
administered to the intent half grown,
or adnlt, of the human species.
He calls attention to the fact that
nearly alt poisons are adulterated, es
pecially Paris green and arsenic, and
are more expensive ihan London pur
ple, which it would bo folly to weaken
or impair, as it would be more cosily
titan the medicine obtained. His chemi
cal knowledge does not'enable me to
give tho exact analysis of this drug,
but it is claimed to bo thO'ivsidum oi

words, to get a merchant to “ran" me
for tins year. Now, sir, the humilia
tion of this tiling is just simply out
rageous. Will our people go on at this
suicidal business? Are we determined
to be “hewers or wood and drawers of
water” for all time? If *o, we are
pursuing proper course; if we intend
to break the bonds, now is the time to
strike. If every planter in the. State
will for this year plant corn enough for

As you have never hsd any experi
ence in making arrangements I will
initiate you, for 1 am full of experience
in that line, and feel fully competent to

While in the city it was my fortune
to meet many planters “hard up” try
ing to arrange. The planter enters the
merchants sanctum and says: “I have
called to offer you my business for an
other year.”
Merchant—Yes! Well, we are phas
ed to know it
Planter.—I will need some a-sisUnce
to get through.
M.—Yes! About what amount will
you need; how will you want it, and
how much cotton will yon shjp?
P.—I will be ah!o to ship cotton on
s«y $6,000 to $8,00 will want most of
it in supplies; - tittle canh, and, as
the year adva --. ill ship from 400
to 500 bales of •* .on.
hi.—Have y i feed sufficient to do
you?
P.—No. I had some hay: but that
is all gone. 1 *i.a!l need about l,5o0
to 2.000 bushels of feed corn—bat that
is included in my estimate.
M.—Will you need any mules?
P.—Yoa, sit; I must have six. I lust
that number last year on account of
feeding shelled corn without hay—for
hay was ;o high I c.-.uM not iffotd to
buy.
M.—You raised no corn yourself?
P.-Yes, sir; T planted com, bnt my
cotton pressed me so hard that! «-
compelled to neglect it to save my cut
ton—and so made but little.
M - —Who has been doing your l»u .i
ness up to date?
P.—Mr. Blank; but he does not suit
me and I desire to make a change.
M.—Do you owe him anything?
P.—Yes, sir; I owo him about $2,000
or $3,000 balance.
M.—What arrangement have you
made to settle this balance?
P.—He is perfectly willing to take
your acceptance, payable next foil, for
the amount
M.—The past season has been rather
unfavorable, and wo find so many of
our friends that need our assistance
that we feel compelled to doolinc your
business; and, yet, roars is a business
wo would like to have under other cir
camstances. Excuse me, please; I see
some brokers in the notion room. C.i’l

board entirely.
Now, if this planter could have said
to the merchant: “I have an ample
supply of corn and hay, my mules are
.(at and . fins, I need aomo pork and a
few other Articles of little importance,"
the merchant and not the planter
would have done the dancing.
