WASHINGTON’S DR^A.ff,
ijmE Sioux, Iowa, >
- June 18,1880. J
1 see a request for Washington’*
Dream, and as one of my neighbors
chanced to have St I borrowed the
paper containing it and take the
liberty to send to yon a copy of the
dream.
Washington's Vision.
•'The lx«t time I ever saw Antho
ny Sherman was on the 4th of July,
1856, in Independence Square. He
was then ninety-nine years old and
becoming very feeble, but, thoogb
so old, his dimmed oyee rekindled
£ as he gazed upon Independence
Hall, which he had come to gaze
- upon once more before he was gath
ered home.
•' r * , m * • *
* “Let us go into the Hall,” he laid.
- “I want to tell yon an incident of
Washington’s life—one which no
orio alive knows of except myself,
and If you live yon will before long
see it verified.. Hark the prediction,
you will see It verified. * *
From the opening of the Revolu
tion we experienced alt phases of
fortune—now good and now ill,
one time’victorioos and another con
quered. The darkest period we
we bad, I think, waa when Wash
ington, after several reverses, re
treated to Valley Forge, where be
resolved to pats the winter of 77.
Ah! I have often seen the tears
coursing down oar dear old com-
■ : manders care-worn checks as he
would be conversing with a confi
dential officer- about the condition
of bis poor soldiers. Vou have
doubtless beard the story of Wash
ington going to the thicket to pray.
Well, it was not only true, but he
used ofton to pray) in secret for aid
and comfort from God, the interpo
sition of whose Divine Providence
brought ns safely throngh those
dark days of tribulation.
“One day, I remember it woll, the
‘ chilly winds whispered through
the leafless trees, thongh the
sky was cloudless and the sun shone
brightly; he remained in his quar
ters nearly all the afternoon alone.
When he came oot I noticed his face
was a shade-paler than usual, and
there seemed to besomctliing on his
mind of moro than ordinary impor
tance. Returning jrst after dusk,
he dispatched an orderly to the
quarters of the officer 1 mention
who was presently in attendance.-
After a preliminary conversation,
which lasted ahont half an hour.
Washington,- gazing upon his com
panion with that strange look of
dignity which he alone could com
mand, said to the latter: “I do not
know whether it is owing to tho
anxiety of ray mind, or what, but
this afternoon as I was sitting at
this tablo engaged in preparing a
dispatch, something in the apart
ment seemed to disturb me. Look
ing up, I beheld, standing opposite
to me a singularly beautiful fqmale.
So astonished was I, for I had given
strict orders not to bo disturbed,
that it was some moments before 1
found language to inquire the cause
of her presence. A second, a third,
and even a fourth time did I repeat
my question, but received no an
swer from my mysterious visitor
except a slight raising of the eyes.
By this time I felt strange sensa
tions spreading through me.- I
would have risen hut the riveted
gaze of the being before me render
ed volition impossible. I essayed
onco more to address her, hut my
tongae had become powerless.
Even thought itself suddenly be
came paralyzed. A new influence,
mysterious, irresistible, look pos
session of mo. All I could do was
to gaze steadily, vacantly, at my un
known visitant. Gradually the
surrounding atmosphere seemed as
thongh becoming filled with sensa
tions and grew luminous. Every
thing about'me seemed to rarify,
jtlie mysterious visitor herself be
coming moro airy, and yet eveu
more distinct to my sight than be
fore. I new began to feel as one
dying, or rather to experience tho
aensatlous which I have sometimes
imagined accompany dissolution. I
' did not think, I did not reason,’I did
not move; all wero alike impossi
ble. I was only conscious of gazing
fixedly, vacantly, at my companion.
. Presently I heard a voice saying,
“Son of the Ropublic, look and
learn,” while at the same time my
viaitor extended her arm oastward-
ly. I now beheld a heavy white va-
□por at some distance rising fold
upon fold. This gradually dissi-
patod, »nd I looked upon a strange
scene. Before me lay spread out In
one vast plain all the countries or
the world—Europe, Asia, Africa,
and America. I aaw rolling and
tossing between Europe and
America the billows of the
Atlantic; and - between’ Asia
- and America lay' the Pacific. “Son
of the Republic;'’ said the same mys
terious voice as before, “look . and
learn.*’ At that moment I beheld a
dark shadowy being like an angel
standing, or, rather, floating in mid
air Detween Europe and America.
Dipping water ont of the ocean in
the hollow of each hand, he sprink
led some upon America with his
right hand while with his left hand
he cast some upon Europe. Imme
diately a dark cloud raised from
each of the countries and joined in
mid-ocean. For a while it remain
ed stationary, and then moved slow
ly ‘Westward, until it enveloped
America in its murky folds. Sharp
flashes of lightning gleamed through
it at intervals, and- I-heard the
smothered groans and cries of the
American people. A second time
the angel dipped water from the
ocean and sprinkled it out as bsfore.
The dark cloud was then drawn
hack to tho ocean, in whose heaving
waves it sank from view. Again
I heard the mysterious voice saying:
“Son of the Republic, look and
learn.” I cast my cyesupon Ameri
ca and beheld villages and towns
and cities springing up one after an
other, until the whole land from the
Atlantic to.the Pacifio was dotted
■with them. Again I heard the mys
terious voice say: ‘-Son of the Re
public, the end of the century
cometh; look and learn.” At Iba
the derk shadowy angel turned his
face Southward, and from Africa I
saw an ill-omened spectre approach
oar land. It flitted slowly and
heavily over town -nd eity'nf the
latter; the inhabitants presently set
themselves in battie array against
each other. As I continued looking
I saw a bright angel, on whose
brow rested a crown of light, on
which was traced ‘-Union,” bearing
the American flag, which was plac
ed between the divided nation, and
said : “Remember, ye arc brethren.'

them their weapons, became friends

mysterious .voice saying: “Son o‘

“‘When the voice had ceased the
dark shadowy angel placed his

conflict, I heard the mysterious
