The /dependent and Republican Co
alition In Georgia.
Ti.e following letter from » trading
Republican in this State, Collector E. ,
C. \V»de, will, be r .1 with ialereit.
It shows how well pleased the Uadi- ,
cals are with the Recent Independent j
outburst in Georgia, and goes, to cop- j
firm .the' statement made by Sena- j
tor Hill to Henry Grady a few day* j
ago, that a conspiracy is hatching for]
the overthrow of the Democracy of j
this State. The fetter was received
at Washington by Col. Jack Brown on
Saturday last, and fell into the hands
of the Washington correspondent of
the Sayaimah JCetea, who telegraphed
it to that paper of Wednesday. Here
it is: . ■' . >' v
“Since yon were here I hare seen in
the newspapers' the lhts announcement
of the Hen. William IL Felton, and
am grea'iy gratified. The platform
the Doctor sets forth is one upou which
I think he can win, as I believe the
Republicans of die States to a man xan
eoiiscientionsly support him upon it.
Feeling confident the Doctor is an In
dependent Republican, and will no lon
ger trail, with or support the Boot bon
Democracy, State or national. I am of
the opinion now that he will be the
Mnhone of Georgia, and wilt be the
leader who is to.firing tts safely into
tbe promised land. Others, no'doubt,
will now come forward who have
been in the past equally as Democratic
and step up on the same platform.
Among those to whom I refer, I hear
it said that Dr. Miller, Minister
Scruggs and Judge Hook will take the
lead. Iam satisfied we shall haTC a
strong Independent movement in this
State—one that will, it is to be hoped,
carry the State into the ranks of the
Republican party. The suggestion you
made of running a Republican or In
dependent, as may be thought best, in
every district for Congress, and in
every county for the Legislature and
county officers, meets with a hearty
response everywhere iu the State, and
when yon return to Georgia yon will
find no digitally in putting the bail in
motion, to the satisfaction of us all.
The great matter to be looked after in
all this bnsiness will be to prevent the
Bonrbon Democrats from running for
office in the guise of Independents,
thereby practicing fraud upon the Re.
publicans, aa has been done in the
past What we want now is men of
character and influence, who will be in
earnest in their efforts to help ns put
down Bourbon Democracy, and T be
lieve we shall get them.

The Washington Post of Sunday
publishes the following letter from
General Johnston:
To the Editor of the Daily Post:
SiBi—When the article headed “Gen
era! Johnston’s Narrative” appeared
in the Philadelphia Press of Decem
ber 18th, I wrote to the editorthat the
conversation on which the narrative
was evidently founded was not an in
terview, and the article was so inac
curate that I would not undertake to
correct' it. This was published by
him promptly. As that article seems
to be read in the South as accurate and
I am charged with having accused Mr.
Davis with having appropriated the
Confedeiate funds he carried through
North Carolina, I write to deny the

imputed to me.
What I did say was fiat the Presi
dent ought to hare accounted for this
money. It is a well-known practice in
this and all other civilized countries
that- those having disposed of public
funds shall account for them. What
I said on that occasion was in an ac
cidental conversation with one whom
I considered much above the class of
interviewers. Therefore. I had no fear
of the publication of what I might say,
and Mid a good deal that nothing
would induce me to say for publica
tion, especially on the subject of the
funds at Greensboro. That part of the
conversation was in connection with
the subject of application twice made
by me that p*H of “"*>■
be paid to the army I then command
ed in North Carolina, which had re
ceived no real pay for several months.
