I would ill requite the welcome did I
not seek to evidence with some grace
of greeting the impulse of an appre
ciative heart, and yet I can do no
more, and certainly not less, lhan to
give utterance to thr ss simple and ex
piessfve three wo.ds of the English
language, “1 thank you.”
In premising the subject permit me
to paraphrase an adage with which
which you are familiar, and say that
“while speakers are not wi.hout hon
or save in their own country,” so far
as your humble servitor exemplifies
this principle he thinks the action ol
his-own country fir the wiser, in that
it best knows the demerits of him
whom you have been pleased to honor
in this capacity.
May I illustrate by referring to that
unsophisticated young clerk in the
posteffice of a Southern city who in
distribu:i >g the mails recently, came
across a letter addressed to “the mos*
ignorant' person in the city.” *J lie
pcstraaster was absent at the time but
on his return the cleik related the in
cident. “And what did you do with
the letter?” inquired the postmaster.
“I opened ir,” replied the clerk. And
why?” "B( cause said the clerk, “i
did not know who the greatest igno
ramus was and 1 wanted to see who
ihe letter was intended for.” “Well

contained ODly four words, ‘thou ait

says 1 10 myself, now can you appio-
priate that clerk’s Interpretation of the
letter, for undoubtedly, “thou art the
man.”
Did you ever undertake to perform
a duty for which you felt incompe
tent and wished you were somebody
else ? There Is au anecdote related of
two soldiers going Into battle, and
into the spirit of pue I can well enter.
His comrade was a very brave man
and as if indicative of his absence of
fear commenced singing that beauti
ful song of Florence Percy:

And make me a child again ja&t for t)-
niglu.”
“Yes.” interrupted his companion,
“and a girl child at, that.”
Why, my friends. 1 am less than the
least within sound of my voice; no
lecturer, no speaker, nor have I more
than ordinary knowledge of the rites
and ceremonies of Pythlanism. My
occupation takes me away Irom my own
lodge the greater portion of my time,
and when I am present a providential
dispensation precludes any active par
ticipation. I come to you tonight
with uo new song upon voy lip®, nor
change of sentiment in my heart. The
principles and truths of Pythlanism
are imperishable and being so they
become self-existent. It is only my

This is bat the twenty-eighth year
of the existence of the order of Knight?
o! Pythias. We do not chim the an
tiquity of whiih some of the other se
cret orders are proud to boast, but we
do say, and Ifistory substantiates ir,
that the beautiful principles of Pyth
ian friendship have had specific recog
nition over 2500 years prior to this
Ch istlan era. The Pythlanism of to
day was orgAnizid in the city of Wash
ington, D. C., on the 39th of February,
1864. On the 14tU of April following,
Lodge No.2 was instituted; in May,
No. 3, and la June, No. 4. At the
close of the year there was a member
ship 01 400. This spark though was
soon fanned iuto a iUme, and at the
close ol the year 1SGG there was re
corded 37 lodges and COOO members.
The next year the column increased
by 400 lodges and 28000 members, and
at the close of the first half decade
there were 500 lodges and a member
ship of 54000.
Once known to men. the order re
ceived a ready and responsive wel
come throughout the land. What a
remarkable and unprecedented growth
was this in the short space of five
years. It is entirely superogatory for
me to trace up and point out the grad
ual and annual increase in strength
and members, as the yeass rolled by,
until now we behold the infant ol
yesterday become the giant of tod*y,
with a roll call of over a quarter mil
lion in 37< 0 lodge?, the turrets of whose
castle halls are almost in sight and

It is but a few years ago that Pyth-
ianism was rounded on Georgia soil,
and it is of interest to refer to the last
session ot the grand lodge in the city
of Brunswick. May 39th, 1891.
The report of Giand Chancellor,
Bro. T. J. Crrliug, was spirited aud
bupefui. The jurisdiction at that date
comprised 37 bright lodges and 3,G00
members. The increase in our own
State over the previous year In mem
bership was 1,3l0. This was a very
creditable showing and was exceeded • ship friendship tna
by only a single souibern State, ihat when te:n?2?t? ca.m
round uumbeis $11G0G0, and in t!<:e
subordinate lodges $1,800,000. The
amount paid out lor relief during Hie

men whose superstition taxes the form
of regarding the possession oi copper

Should a stray penny find Its way into

This habit Is common among poli

ordinary kind, actors and some busi

the table. These men, who look upon
the despised but useful copper as a

medicinal qualities of each ingredient. This

therefore, not a decoction; bnt It is a com
