Lofty Mountain Lnkot.
Tlio most lofty lukos aro found
among tho Himulaya mountains in
Thibot. Tlioir altitiules do not, how
ever, scorn to havo boon very accu
rately gauged, for different authori
ties give widoly different figures re
garding them. According to some,
Lake Mnnuriarownr, ono of tlio sacred
lakes of Thibot, iB between 10,000 and
20.000 feet nbovo tho lovel of tho sea,
and if this is so it is undoubtedly tho
loftiest in tho world.
Two other Thibetan lakes, those of
CUatmnoo and Surakol, aro said to bo
17.000 and 16,400 feet in altitudo re
spectively. For a long time it was
supposed that Lake Titicaca, in South
America, was tho loftiest in the
world. It covers about 4,600 squaro
miles, is 024 feet in its greatest depth
and is 12,000 feet above the sea. In
spite of inexactitude with regard to
the measurements of the elevation of
the Thibetan lakes they are no doubt
considerably higher than this or any
other.—Chicago Herald.
