Capitol officials are donning shirt
waists. A shirtwaist club has been
formed, and State Entomologist W. M.
Scott has been elected president.
The mooting of the club was field yes
terday afternoon, and this morning
President Scott appeared with a shirt
waist of a loud hue. It was red and
white and attracted considerable atten
tion/ Mr. Scott «nys herwifter he will
never again wearaooafc In the summer;
time.
Dt. T. I,. Watsou, assistant state geol-'
og-ist, who was made vice president of
the club, also cutue down to his office
tofay wearing owe of the new inven
tions for men. The color of his gar
ment was blue—'solid blue!
Harry Cabants* wore abtaeand white
•sue.
Inspector General Qbear wore the
regulation blua one .required by the
Georgia militia. ,
AssistantJCem in issioner of A fjrionlt-u re
Wright appeared in one with black.and
white Rtripus. He looked as if ho bad
never seen a hot day in his life.
Governor Gaudier refur,ed to join the
club. He is opposed to shirtwaists /or
men. He gave out an interview last
year in which he condemned the tiew
wearing apparel which some Atlantians
had been bold enough to take up.
Secretary Hitoh, of the executive de
partment, nnuounoed this morning that,
he m ould join tho club, and get Rome
shirtwaists immediately—ribbons and
all. He likes white ones with pink
ribbons and delicate lace work in the
background, and a thin yoke arouud
the waist.
Secretary of State Oook says ho will
be a member of the club b$r tomorrow,
and will place his orders for some waists
this afternoon.
Comptroller General Wright stated
that while he would not. wear a shirt
waist he would leave off his coat while
in the office. This will make him an ex-
officio member of the club, so President
Scott says.
Attorney General Terrell would not
consider the matter when lie was called
on. Like Mayor Mima, he has purchas
ed a new silk coat for office use and says
under tho circumstances he could not
join the club.
Secretary Yancey, of the prison com
mission, is one of the most enthusiastic
members of thq|^gauization, and suys
the new garment is the greatest thing
ever invented. When approachod to
join the club he readily consented, and
wanted to know why tho idea had not
been suggested several years ago.
Albert Sidney Johnstone, of the geol
ogical department, appeared in a shirt-
wiiisfc this morning that could be heard
all over the capitol. With it he had a
high collar—so high In fact it was hard
for him to see over it. When President
Scott saw him he issued an order sis-
pending Mr. Johnstone from the organ
ization.
Other officials are expected to join.
FLIES WORSE THAN MOSQUITOES
As Disseminators ol Various Forms ol
Disease.
From tin* PIiUniU4phfn Milllonl .Nttiriml.
A number of investigators eomtly
have called attention to the Important
rolo played liy insects In disseminating
diseases. Because of their great num
bers and aotive habits files are, no doubt,
the most dangerons insects in ■ this
respect. After feeding on the expecto
ration of the tuberculous, ou tho faces
of typhoid patients or other infective
material they carry disease germs into
innumerable places and deposit them
not only by direct eoniaot with their
filthy little bodies, lint by their excreta
and the dost formed by the crumbling
of their dead bodies. Restaurants in
fested witli flies are special abomina
tions. The danger from this source Is
not small, and as the summer ir now ou
ns in good earnest with hordes of theso
pests,-it seems desirable that every thing
possible Bhall be done to limit the
amonnt of mischief done fey them.
More effective uvea-sores are needed for
destroying flics mnri preventing their
multiplication. The war on mosquitoes
by our sanitary (hqmrtmeiif in Gnba has
shown what can be done in exterminat
ing inHe ts, aud the preparations which
are already being made in several dif
ferent places in our couutry to carry
out the Oulmu methods show feliat the
people are willing to act. if they are
shown the ben* ways. Until some suc
cessful method has been devised for
extermiuatiug flies special care should
he taken to prevent their access to
sputnm, pus or other infectious ma
terial; fruits and foodstuffs should be
thoroughly cooked or washed If fltes
have been allowed to come in contact
with them, and should be protected
from flies after preparation Cor use.

New Rood May Soon be Bull!— Central Has
Applied lor Charier.
A Columbus speolal to the Atlanta
Journal contains Information that Is of
Interest in this oity and throughoat this
section,',for it has reference to the long
proposed extension of the Georgia Pino
railway, which now runs from Bain-
bridge to Arlington, from th« latter
place to Oolnmbns. The dispatch fol
lows :
Columbia, Ga., July 1 —It begins to
look now like Oolnmbns Is to have two
railroads from Oolnmbns to Arlington.
About a year ago the Georgia Pine Rail
way Company applied for and received
a chart! r to build a line of road through
this territory from Arlington to Culum-
bns and for qnlte a while it looked as
though the road would be built right
away, but for some reason there was a
lull In the enthusiasm and not mno)i has
been heard sinoe about it. Now there
is an application being made for a char
ter by J. F. Hanson and other officials
of the Central of Georgia railway to
build the Oolnmbns and Arlington road,
which.it is proposed, will run through
the same country and from the samo
objective points. It was rumored some
time ago that the Central people and the
Georgia Pine were pretty close to a
trade for the sale of the latter to the
Central, and while nothing definite
could be learned here about 1), Oolnrn
bos people had abont given np the idea
of getting the Georgia Pine to come to
this place.
Now it seems that snoh was not the
case, and that the name of the Georgia
Pine line been changed to the Georgia,
Florida and Alabina, and that they will
comrnenco work on tho end betweon Co
lumbus and Arlington within the next
two weeks. It is also stated that they
will use every effort to prevent Hanson
! and his associates from* securing their
i charter and hnildiug their road as pro
posed
j This state of affairs is a pretty sure
guarantee that one or the other will be
I built now very soon.

GLUTTONY
Is more common than we may tliink, If
we define gluttony as eating Seyoud the
body’s need of sustenance ana beyond
the stomach's capacity for digestion and
assimilation of food. That is a fair
definition, and it fastens the name glut
ton on many a person who would resent
the term as an insult The fact of this
gluttony is marked by its consequences.
The overloaded stomach becomes dis
eased. The popular term for the condi
tion is w weak ” stomach. The w weak M
stomach fails in furnishing adequate nu
trition for the body, and soon the "weak
ness ” spreads from tlie stomach to other
organs.
Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discover;’
cures diseases of the stomach and other
organs of digestion and nutrition. It
enables the perfect assimilation of food,
by which alone the health and strength
of the body is maintained.
"Your medicine helped me to much th.t I
