IT IS OIL!
ALL OCCASION FOR DOUBT SEEMS TO
HAVE BEEN REMOVED.
Toe Substance Which Cornel Irom Albany's
New Arlesian Well Lookr, Smells, Lu' 1
rlcates and Burns Like Oil—The EnU .
•laals Excited Again,
From Friday's Hekald.
Thn exoltement In Albany over the
discovery, or the supposed discovery, of
oil has been revived. A few days age
most of the oil enthusiasts iu the city
had obont given up all hope that the
mysterious substance (wktoh floated on
the surface of water coming from the
new artesian well being bored for the
olty was oil. Now, however, they are
certain that it is nothing else, and there
appear to be sufficient grounds on which
to base that belief.
As before stated in the Herald, sev
eral teste have been made for the pur
pose of ascertaining exactly what this
strange substance is. The state geolo
gist came to Albany last week, but did
not sucoeed in determining the matter to
his own satisfaction or that of the people.
He carried a sample of the water from
the well wi-h him to Atlanta, and stated
that he vt ould have the state chemist
make a test. The result of this test, if
it was ever made.Jhas not yet been made
known here. |
It was stated in the Herald yester
day that a test had been made in which
some of the greasy looking snbstance
from the well had been made to bnrn,
and later trials have proved even more
enoouragtng. Yesterday evening lie,
L. E. Welch took several ounces of the
mysterious substanoe which oame from
the well and made a test by means of
mixing it with sulphuric other. After
the ether had evaporated, it was found
that the residisim was an oily matter of
a deep yellowcolor, that its lubricating
qualities were good, its odor much like
that of common petroleum, and that It
burned as rapidly as kerosene. The
Herald saw tests made with some of
the substance obtained by Dr. Weloli,
and became thoroughly convinced that
it was oiL Many others (have become
thoroughly sstisfled.
It is probable that the whole matter
will be settled for ns beyond nil doubt
before a great while. It seems assured
that the well is to be carried down
deeper .in search of a more adequite
water supply than has yetbeen, and the
drill will soon tell us whether oil in any
considerable quantity lies beneath ns.
The otty authorities' are in search of
water, and the well would be stopped
where itiis If a water sapply adequate to
the requirements of the city had been
found. Hut the present flow is not
equal to the public demand for water,
and a larger supply must tie sought.
There are now hundreds of persons In
Albany who no longer donbt that there
are "miUions in oii" a thousand or more
feet below us, and that sooner or later
the treasure will be opened up. A stook
company ito bore an oil well, in the
event the .city’s well does not finally
and satisfactorily settle the question, is
.already talked abont.
