THAT SOOTH GEORGIA
BIG LAND SYNDICATE.
What the English ^Company
Whose Agent Has Been Tak
ing Options on Lands Pro
poses Doing.
From Monday’s Daily Hkuald.
Moat poople'iu this region are aware
of the fact that Oapt. Sam. H. Hunter,
of Macon, Ga., representing a company
of English capitalists, has been taking
options on lands in Dougherty, Lee, Cal
houn, Terrell and perhaps other counties
in "this part of the state, aud there has
been muoh inquiry and speculation as to
what it all meaut. Thousands of acres
of lands have been optioned |at .various
prices, aud it is understood that the
maximum limit has now been about
xeaohed, although it is known that
Oapt. Hunter has been trying to nego
tiate with land ownors in this county
during the last few days.
The following, published by the
Macon Telegraph of this morning from
its Atlanta correspondent, seems to
convey some idea as to what the English
company purposes doing, and will be
read with interest by everybody in this
seotion:

Atlanta. Oot. 37—A representative of
the Liplou company of London, limited,
called upon Secretary of State Philip
Cook at his office in tliecapitol in Atlan
ta last Friday, in referenoe to a matter
that may mean a great deal to the Sonth,
and espeoiqlly the Southern part of
Georgia, and which bids fair to revoiu
lionize the farming industry of the
Sonti.
This gentleman was Dr. John Alton
Harris, of London, who came duly ac
credited as the agent of the company of
whioh Sir Thomas Lipton is the presi
dent. The publio has been duly in
formed heretofore of the 11,000 stores
that the Lipton oompanies operate in
all parts of Enrope, the headquarters of
which are looated in London.
The management has found it diffi
cult to supply the demands for the pro
ducts of the truck farms, aud after duly
considering the magnitude of the under
taking, with all the accompanying draw
backs, has hit upon the novel sohome to
establish farming stations at different
intervals in the southern part of Geor-
gia.
In order to export these prodnots the
oompany will establish a line of steam
ers between Savannah, Ga„ and Liver
pool, England. It is proposed to bring
over a thrifty ol'ass of German garden
ers, and they will serve the double pur
pose of bringing the land up to the fnll
measure of its production, and inoulcat-
mg the lesson of diversified farming
amoug the ''natives.’'
It is a soheme pregnant with great
possibilities for this seotion, and ie a
good thing, too, for the Lipton people,'
for investigation has shown that a higher
and more abundant production per aore
is possible in the South Georgia lands of
(5 per aore than in the $80 and $40 per
aore patohes in Earope.
About six months ago a dapper look
ing individual circulated among the
farmers of South Georgia and secured
options on farming tracts conveniently
situated. He did not toll his business,
but merely gave it out that he might
invest in some of tjiose lands. He se-
oured twelve months’ options on over
100 000 acres. These tracts lie at inter
vals between Branswlok and Oolumbus,
Ga.
After these options ’were scoured the
owners of |the laud thought no more
about it, as months had elapsed sinoe
they were secured, and they oonoluded
that the stranger had possibly given up
the idea of. in zesting in any lands in
this seotion. Several days ago Dr. Har
ris, the London representative of the
Lipton oompany, went over the ground
in Sonth Georgia and inspeoted the
property on whioh they ljeld options.
He talked freely with the people
about the possibilities of truck farming
in this state, and unfolded the plan, to
make this territory the productive area
from whioh the 3,000 European stores
could draw an unfailing supply of
“truok,” cattle, sheep, poultry, eto.
Dr. Harris’ object was to find out if the
surrounding farmers would co-operate
and go more into diversified farming.
He was assured on all sides that they
woald. From South Georgia Dr. Harris
came to Atlanta ami conferred with
state offloials at the oapitol. On all
hands he was assured of the hearty co
operation of the people in this seotion
if the enterprise was launched.
Dr. Harris talked most interestingly
of the enterprise. While a native Lon
doner, he ie attached to Georgia by the
reason of his reoent marriage with one
of her fair and accomplished daugh
ters. During the Paris Exposition Mrs.
"Valeria Lamar McLaren was one of the
itady reprewatittiveeof'ttw ***** **"
pointed, by Governor Candler. She is
the daughter of the late Henry J. La
mar, of Macon, who left his daughter a
snug fortune within itself.
Mrs. MoLaren at the time she repre
sented Georgia at Paris, was a widow.
It was there that Dr. Harris met her,
and the acquaintance soon ripened iuto
love, followed by a romant o courtship,
whioh culminated at the marriage altar . — — •*-** -
It was for a double purpose, therefore, noou, and a verdiot of guilty soon fol-
that the distinguished Britisher came to lowed.
