The Metllis o» Saturday,
At an\eariy hour in tho morning tho
crowd commenced gathering, aud by ten
o'clock tho streets Were crowded. Almost
every planter in tho community had fur
nished wagons and mules to transport his
hands to town. An unfortunate misnniler-
Htauding occurred between tiic negroes
themselves. Dut nljout one o'clock they
, commenced gathering at the Court House,
ami (juite a crowd came up, but not more
than one-third of tho number in tho city.
The truth is thoy did not understand uor did
they care what was going on.
Speeches were made by C. Ilroadenax,
Phil Joiner, I’ctev Hines, l»ill Johnson and
Geo. Washington, colored, and by Col. 1>.
P. Hill, P. Strozicr And Hen. Morgan.
Two of the speeches were of tho most ma
lignant eharasler, and resulted in no good,
being 1 he recital of personal wrongs, revenge
aud spite. The others were temperate, and
though nbt in accordance with our feelings,
yet they were respectful in tone and digni.
lied in manner.
Many were in error as to the object of the
meeting, and those who were tin* more dis
satisfied seemed to uuderNtnud that the
whites were to meet the blacks in debate
upon the question of suffrage. Nothing
was further from the design of those who
projected the meeting, so we are told.
Their was no disturbance nor difficulty
attending the day’s exercises. Our colored
people deserve much credit for their good
behavior. N> many thousand whiles coin
ing togelhereoiihl not have separated with
out some disturbance.
Farming.
Mu. Km rou:- Revolution has invaded
everything of late years, except, farming.
That stands solitary alone as an exception,
'fbo old principle of the “rook in one end
and the pumpkin in the other,” still obtains
among Soul hern farmers, and I am compelled
to think tluuVtii entire new set of farmers
will have to come upon the stage before we
can ever get rid of the Influences• of thty
absurd old principle. It is rarely that men
change their views after forty. The old
style of spreading labor over hundreds and
thousands of acres of land, instead of con
centrating it upon a comparatively small
portion of ground is so deeply ingrained
into t he very nnt tire of the Southern farmer
that it xv ill he almost impossible to eradicate
it. “That's the way daddy made a living
and I reckon I can do it too,” is tin* prevail
ing idea with a large majority, ami has the
clicet of utterly destroying all hope of im
provement. Aud yet all the real and sub
stantial general improvement ol the eotin*
Iry must necessarily depend upon the farm
ing interest as a basis.

Alt interesting argument occurred Yester
day in the Senate on the adjournment. The
point made was that u special session was
called hy the 1'resident, and that, it cannot
legally adjourn without his consent. It
would !>o a dispersion. The difficulty lies
in keeping a quorum together, wit until
which the-Semite cannot work nor adjourn
mini: mk. If a quorum should he present
oil Tuesday, the session will hf* prolonged;
if not, the (.'hairman will adjourn the Senate
under yesterday’s action. Several Radical
Senators announced that were they 1 ‘resid

nominating friends and supporters. There
