News will receive the unanimous indorse
ment of the conservat ive press of Louisiana:
Wc have not seen n single Southern mail

should he taken to avoid anything like im

sally urged that his ciitrniieliisemeut should
forma strong reason for increasing his fa

yet to see the Southern mail who does not
meet tho nuestion squarely and honestly,
with mi ardent desire that* the negro may
make such a use of his new privilege as to
show that he is worthy of it, mid with a
full disposisiou to help him to that result.
Such manifestations, under such eiieiim-
Btnnccs, are enough to give one a better
opinion of human nature.
Misery and Happiness.—The misery of
human lifu is made ot large masses, each
seperated from the other l»y certain inter
vals. One year the death of a child; years
after, a failure in trade; after another
larger or shorten interval, a daughter limy
have married unhappily; iu aH hut the
singularly unfortunate integral parts that
compose the sum total oftlie misery of man’s
life arc easily counted and distinctly r
me inhered. The happiness of life, on the
contrary, is made up of minute fractions;
the little soon-forgotten charities of a kiss,
a smile, a kind look, a heartfelt compliment
in the disguise ot playful railery, and the
countless other infinitesimals of pleasurable
thought and genial feeling.
Frivolities.
Sailor’s Wit.—A lady at sea full ofdeli-
eate apprehensions iu a gale of wind, cried
out, among other exclamations : “We
shall all go to the bottom ! Mercy on us,
how my head swims.” “Madam, never
fear,” said one of the sailors, “you ran
