mankind e.vjioels to reach eternity the soon
er hy their impatient attemps to annihilate
time, or whetnar they take pleasure in the
mere conquering of obstacles the truth is
that more and more study is giving to tlio
science ol going through things rntTier than
around them. Tu accordance with this
spirit, wo see the railroads every where push
ing through the mountains; the Mas
sachusetts men nndismayed hy years of in
efficient expense, vote now nnproprint ions
to the everlasting Ifbosniy Tunnel; tho
Californians climb the steep slopes of the
Snowy ltange until, impatient of delay, they
strikethrough the mountains to reach the
plains; the tunnels on English railways are
models ol engineering beauty; notwith
standing the nsolossness of the Thames Tun
nel, the proposition now is to undcrrnn the
Straits of Dover, nnd tlio greatest tunnel
feat of the world is now noire its accomplish
ment in the road that pierces tho harrier of
Mount Cenia.
