A Virginia correspondent gives the New
York Times some information of the start
ling fact that the probabilities arc in favor
of their being a majority of negro voters in
the Stateol Virginia, and says:
This is duo to tho refusal of many of the
whites to register themrolvos under the
Military hill. It is believed that about WO,
ikio negro voters have been registered 1 :
w hile tho whites, who could lirtvo registered
to the number of 120, 000, nro according to
computation now made, several thousand
behind the Macks. That the negroes will
net compactly in politics and make strenuous
attempts to elect their own sneeial repre
sentatives, black or white, tliere is little
doubt; and that muoli bitterness of feeling
between the two races will be engendered
ill the contest for political supremacy, is
evident Iroin the present course of things.—
Our correspondent remarks that the “large
preiionderaueo ol registered blacks over
whiles, in a portion ol Eastern Virginia, has
tilled the jieople with gluotn and arlnrm.—
Tho reproaches which are visited upon the
delinquent whites are very severe, and the
indignation which is every were felt against
the blind mid senseless newspapers which
have misled the white men into so deplora

the negroes, pervades every part of the
country.
We very much tear that what has taken

discover their mistake.
It is singular that there should he found

Prcsiderit Johnson has written a letter re
questing .Gen. Breckinridge to come home,
and to lend his powerful inHueuseiu there-

We regard John C. Breckinridge as one of
the first statesmen ol tho world—a man of
whom any nation might be proud to call

can ill afford to 'keep in exile. It is not
true, as has boon recently stated, that “Gen

of secession. On the contrary lie was op
posed to secession, and his own hand drew
up the “Crittenden Resolutions." designed
to prevent secession. Theso “resolution"
would havo |*asscd and avertod the war, hut
for the opposition of Northern Radicals.—
We repeat this statement simply as a fact

July 15th, 1««7. i
R. K. Hinks, Esq.,—Dear Sir: Dr. I*. S.
Bower, who has been extremely active in
bin exertions in India!f ol ,tlie South Georgia
and Florida Railroad, handed me your letter
to-day, and asks me to reply to you. I need
not way it gave much pIcaHtirc to hear from
you as an old friend, but particularly glad
to sen you so much enlisted in the cause of
our Railroad, and your willingness to aid
us in furthering subscriptions of stock, and
that your people arc awake to their inter
est h, and will give substantial aid iu order
to complete tiik enterprise, that gives you
a connection not only to Brunswick and Sa
vannah hy.a nearer line ot Road, but it will
open up to your people Jacksonville, For-
nandinn ami St. Murks, Fla. Tliouiasville
and Albany will be tin? gate-ways of the en
tile Florida travel and Western trade. It
sborlciiH the travel to New York nearly
three hundred miles by rail, and to St. Louis,
Missouri, and other great Western Cities,
nearly six hundred miles, and as you justly
remark, will create a competition, and there
by reduce freights.
I am glad to say the prospect for the cer
tain and early completion of tho Road to
Albany is extremely flattering, and wo de
sire to put the whole Rond under contract
for grading early next yenr at furthest.
We have n nkw subscription list of indi
viduals ol ♦48,000. The people of this coun
ty Imve votcd a subscription of ♦ 100,000,
and the city of Thomasvllle have voted a
subscription of ♦50,000.
Tin* old subscription list amounts to
about ♦126,000. (>1 tliis old list, many have
died and moved away, while a few of these
old subscribers will continue and pay their
subscriptions. There will-lie, and is,on lioth
lists, over ♦200,000 subscriptions in Thomas
county.
Meetings will soon he held iu Mitchell
and linker comities to get subscriptions, aud
afterwards your citizens will be called upon
tor the same purpose.
We hope the people, iu all theso counties,
are fully aroused us to the importance of this
Road, and ns their interests are ns great as
(ini's, it is expected that sulliciciit stock will
be subscribed by them to complete the Road.
Nothing, now, will hinder the early prose
cution and completion of the Road to Al
bany, hut the lethargy of the people in the
counties above us, through which the Road
will pass.
Wc have assurances from the Railroad
leaders iu Florida that the gup (21 miles) t «•
Monticello, Fla., will lie speedily built by
them, without asking us lor aid.
An outlet WILL NOON IIK FOHCKH TtlltOl'Utt
from Fi.oiuda to connect with the chain of
Ronds to the West and North-West. The
line through via Tliouiasville and Albany is
IIIK PKKKKKAHI.K IIOUTK, hilt il WO fail to
improve the present opportunity, the whole
Railroad influence of Middle Florida will
be centered ton line trom Tallahassee, and
Quincy to Baiuhride and Ciithbort, Ga?
which is the next best and most direct con
nection.
We have specially refrained from taking
steps towards canvassing for subscriptions
iu Mitchell, Baker aud Dougherty, because
we wished, first, to put oursolves iu a posi
tion to command success. We have shown
our faith by our works. We have a hand
some showing upon record to point at, and
wo can now confidently call upon the
frieudsof this greatest enterprise to South-
Western Georgia to come up to our help.
If they will go and do likewise, the South
Georgia and Florida Railroad will soon lie
completed, and tho waters of the Flint and
the Gulf of Mexico will Ihj milted by the
Iron Horse.
Our Company is regularly organized, with
President and Directors, and we are prepar
ed to rcccivo subscriptions of stock. And
we heartily avail ol your proffered services
to open a book for subscriptions iu your
county. Aud we trust you may fucceod iu
getting full as much subscribed in Dough
erty as is now subscribed in Thomas comity.

Peter Parker, and upon which rained for so
many months the iron hail of another and a
more powcrfuul fleet, resisting it with a gal
lantry and constancy that have won for it
fame—UiiAiiLKtiToN, once tliccity of hospi
tality and refinement,ol commercial enter,
prise and of wealth, says the Atlanta Intel
ligeneer* now' feels “the evil day” resting
upon her. No longer what she once was
the pride and boast of her citizens, and o:
the people of the Stale ol which she was the
emporium, she has become, if the following
picture of the present be true, and we be
lieve that it is, almost desolate on the very
“verge of dispair.” Deeply do we spmpa-
tlii/.e with the people of this noble “city by
the sea!” Northern fanaticism may term it
“just retributionil it be so, well—lier peo
ple bear it like men. But we question the
“retribution,” and claim for the past of her
people a record that may well be envied by
any other deople, one that entitles them to
rhe admiration and sympathies of even their
enemies. We present the picture of Charles
ton as she now is, drawn by one wbo seems
to write of what he knows, and presented
by him, on the Fourth of July just passed,
to the Intelligencer at Washington City. It
reads as follows:
“Our people are on the verge of dispair.—
Om capitalist have remitted whatever mon
ey they could realize into gold to Liver
pool and France, fearing the political events
of the next twelve months. Our real estate
is almost unsaleable*, very little ol our land
ran be sold at any price. All building and
enterprise have stopped. Temporary exis
tence seems to be the only anxiety. The
threat of confiscation and agrarianism that
Messrs. Stevens A Co. hold over us as I)a-
mode’s sword, is last undermining every
thing like a hope of pence, and in addition
to this the certainty of having a negro Stale
government, from Governor to constable,
caps the climax of our misery, The Northern
people, do not realize how poor and broken
spirited we are, or they would not be liu-
nuin to eoiiliuue tlieir harsh exactions of us
flic efforts to make bread, aud to eke out a
bnfD existence, is beyond belief. Many of
the people who were able to save a little sil
ver plate and jewelry have been Helling it
and pawning it for the past two years to
buy bread and clothing for tliemsolvcH and
little ones. We have seen articles that be
longed to Revolutionary generals sold
old gold, «hat live years ago no money
could have bought, hut starvation isa hard
master.
Noble Old City ! May the furture restore
your ancient proeperity, aud may your sons
and your daughters, vour noble matrons
your patriotic statesmen, now in the hind of
the living, live on to witness it!
