at being able to report this venerated mid
useful Institution ill n prosperous euiidition
During the seliolastie year now closing,
there have been one hundred and lifly-three
pupils in attendance, which fact we regard
encouraging, when it is considered t lull there
are so many high schools anil colleges for
omig ladies in this State.
We have noticed carefully, the deport
ment of the miplls, hoil, ill *t|,e recitation
room and during the hours of recreation,
and in their orderly, lady-liktt conduct, we
have witnessed the evidences of wholes
discipline and good management. We are
satisfied that the esteemed I’resident, Rev.
John M. Ilotmell, and his able corps of teach
ers fully reaii/.e the responsibilities of their
position, as those who have liecn Selected®

fulness,
examination, which was continued
through four days, gave evidence of snpe-
ior skill and earn on the part, I Professors,
and close application on the part of students,
it was conducted throughout will, fairness
and impartiality, mul was entirely satisfac
tory.
All tho classes acquitted thmnsi lvos wi ll,
uml Hiirh being the ease, it may mil he just
to discriminate, but we think it ilue to stale,
that, in the judgment of (he committee, the
Senior and .lunior classes particularly, dis
tinguished themselves in their examination
in Latin, Trignometry, Natural Science and
Astronomy; showing not only familiarity
with these subjects, hut what is unusual, a
proper appreciation ol their practical im
portance in woman’s sphere.
We examined the specimens of painting
presented and found them we.ll executed,
their skill in this department reflecting
<»reat credit on their instructor in this pleas
ing art.
On Sunday 7th, the commencement ser
mon was preached to a large and attentive
congregation, at .Mulberry St., .M. K.
Church, by the ltcv. W. T. llraiitley, D. D.,
of Atlanta. The sermon was concise mid
impressively delivered, the speaker exhibit
ing familiarity with his theme; which was,
“Purity of heart as woman’s best, most ap
propriate ornament.”
The reading of selected pieces by the
Sophomore class on Monday gave perfect
satisfaction, to friends and listeners in the
audience; the young ladies read theirdiHer-
ent selections with an case and self-posses
sion seldom seen, and they were greeted fre
quently with the applause oftlie hearers.
Tho .lunior exhibition on Tuesday morn
ing was a brilliant success, rotlectin’g honor
on the class, whose compositions were mark
ed by clearness, originality and good sense.
W c are almost persuaded to make special
mention of several of manifest ability, hut
propriety forbids such discrimination,* when
all did so well.
The Annual Literary Address by lion. W.
II. Chambers, of Columbus, was one of tin*
most interesting to wliiJi it lias been our
fortune ever to risleTT\JhJis subject was “the
infiuence of culture on woman’s loveliness,”
and it was ably presented, the orator hold

an hour.

On Wednesday, eoniincncement day, the

These were excellent in style, and 1'ead in a
very impressive manner. They exhibited
a maturity ot'thought and a degree of cul

be equal to any that has ever graduated in
this venerable*Institution.
The Baccalaureate of President Bonnell,
