John Pope, one of the fivo American tnon
aroha, and King of Goorgia, Alabama and
Florida, has issued hi* Royal Kdict No. 49.
Had any one predicted Are years ago that a
person would bo clothed witli authority or
placed in a position to isaue such an order in
thisoountry, would have been aooountcd fit
only for a lunatic assylum; but now, so far
fVom that, we are becoming accustomed to
such things, and aro bowing our necks under
the imperial yoko with all due submission.
King John, when he was nothiug but a

also in tho habit of informing, through theso
papers, the pooplo of the timo and plaoe of
public meetings in which they are interest

King John, directs that these olvll officers
must publish their advertisements in n cer

and he instructs all military officers, of what

that this-ediot Is strietly' ehforoed, and io
promptly arrest and roport the slightest vl

King John has, in reality no such power
and authority. It is an assumption of des
potism which no absolute monarch in the
world, except one of the Fivo Amerioau
Monarch*, would dare think of tor a mo
ment. It would ooet the Kingdom and
Throne of the Mightiest ruler in tho Uni

We are In ignorance as to the nature of
the sin that we have committed to render us
obnoxious to the powers that be, yet wc are

and we submit gracefully, knowing that to

insolent and rebellions.
We have carefully refrained from endors

those who oppose the holding of a conven

in regard to the political questions of the
day, but because of.an unwillingness to in

Mr. Editor :—The quiet that pervades
this place is very suggestivo and apDropri-
"ate for meditation. And one of the thoughts
that havo annoyed me no little in, why do
peoplo go to the springs ? It seems simple
within itself, but viewing it from this stand
point, it ismars difficult of solution. I took
the Ubertyofinterrogating a number of per
sons to-day upon this subject. Almost eve
ry ouCafgiied'h'difnrent roaqou- An old
gray haired man replied: “I havo been toil
ing for yoara, and I have seen the fruit* of
my labor swept away in tho Inst few years;
what I now have, I intend to enjoy." An
olderly lady exclaimad ; “The Joys of home
have departed—tho kin* oi tho household
were carried away by the war—my daugh
ters are married—my husband preoeeded
into that ’paM realm boyond,’ and with this
grandchild, I havo sought to smooth *hc rr-
nnd total boom'd vory silly talk to some very
silly young Indy. Home come to. convince
the world of tbeir exceeding fino financial
abilities—to show how a clerk, with a very
moderate salary, can oul-dress his employer
nnd havo more ready cash than anybody
else. And not untrequcntly they come to
show off somebody clscs good clothes. So
much have I learned by being at tho springe;
and why I am here may bo asked, but cer
tainly it is of no consequence, and if I must
roply, I oome to see what iools and carica
ture* ot humanity that fashion makes of men
and women, and not among the least of
these do I rank myself.
Enough of this speculation. Tho crowd
at this place is increasing slowly and we
have a fair sprinkle of beauty, wit and in
telligence. Tho entertainments are splen
did, nnd our inlcroourso tho most pleasant.
I have been examining tho market sinco
my Inst, and it would compare favorably
with any In middle or South-west Georgia.
Wo have tho finest beef at six cents per
pound; the fattest mutton at two dollars
per head; the largest chickqps at fifteen
cents each; butter, equal to any goshen,
from twelve and a-lialf to fifteen cents per
pound ; eggs ten cents per doxen; board,
outsido the springs betel, at the very best
houses, soventy-fi vo cents per day, nnd every
thing found. An my frioml across the table
says, it is cheaper staying hero than at
home.
The other day, I .went in company with
others, to the village of Christianburgb,
some four miles distant, nnd whilo there wc
heard a radical speech, by ono Moss, of the
Iioiinicutt school. It was the same old
hnrrnnguc cut anil dried by tbeir great mas
ter. Tho effort of this sunburnt Moss, so
far ns I could discern, foiled to make muoli
of nn impression. However, it was report'
oil to Richmond ns a grand demonstration
and uprising of tho people, but I am confi
dent that there was not exceeding twenty
white men in tho houso at any one time
while I remained, nnd not more than fifty
negroes. But it has become so natural for
theso scamps to lio that one can almost for-
givo them whon they follow in tho wake of
thoirfuthcr, for neeording to Holy writ lie
was a liar from the beginning.
The old Commonwealth groans under her
disgrace, but is hopeful yet that she can vor-
rlfy the truth of her motto, “Sic Semper
Tyronnus."

OBITUARY.
Died, at Magnolia Springs, on 20th Inst., in the
lUtli year of her age, Mrs. Loot B. Robimsos, wife
of Cspt. Geo. F. Robinson, of Lee county.
Thus has passed away in the morning of her beau

the joy of her husband’s heart. Young in years,
surrounded by orerythlng that could wake life hap
py, U pleased God in UU providence, to call her
from this land of*gravcs. She has passed the dark
river, aud many loving hearts are left to mourn the
sudden bereavement. To her strioken husband and
orphaned babe the loss is irreparabls. But why
should we mourn a*those without hope? when we
know
“Death's but the path that must be trod,
If wo would ever pass to God."
