What Mtkw the Matt.
Ilravely to endure the ills of life, book
up, and feel tlmt, although the storm is
breaking upon your life boat, soon the calm
bringing peace and hope, will follow, and
your tempest tossed bark will be safely
lauded in the haven of rest. What ? though
you have trials and disappointments thro'
life. Who is free from them ? bile is lull
of them, and happy is that man, who, with
fortitude and moral courage is able to with
stand- them.—-lie sure you nre right, then
go ahead,” is a good motto, and should he
well observed. II a student seek and at
tain the highest summit ol intellectual
greatness, “where lames' proud temple
shines afar,*’Dare to do right, regardless
of tho opinions of those who criticize yoiir
actions, for no other reason than they envy
you» greatness.
In every station in life, faithfully pcrlorm
every duty which houor, truth and justice
demand. In your intcrcousc with your
iellow man, forget not the injunction to “do
good unto all men” and render to everyone
his due. In works of love and clmirity, and
in the performance ot those kindly offices,
which go very far to make up tho sense of
human happiness, be among the first to ex
tend a helping hand to the worthy and do
serving. Imitate the example ol those il.
lustrious worthies—the heroes and martyrs
ol the past—who conscience o! their integ
rity, and the purity of their motives, brave
ly withstood tyranny, threats, laggots and
tortures in the deft me if iruth. IintlV man
fully for the cause of truth, even though mis-
f.rtunes should assail you—and friends for-
sako yon, for “troth is mighty and will pre
vail.”
Above all things, remember the duty yon
owe your creator who safely guides you
“o’er the tempestuous sea of life.” Then at
last when you shall be called from these
scenes of our earthly action to render to
Him an account of your stewardship, you
can depart hence iu peace, for r
“Sustained and soothed by an unfaltering
trust,
Thod canst approach thy grave,
Like one who wraps the drapery of his
touch about him,
And lies down to pleasant dreams.”
('aib an4 Credit Business.
*-u.
The following sensibleTrtiele from the
New York Financial Bulletine, is replete
with good advice to our business men which
they would do well to heed :
The principal business transactions of
the city iu merchandise are done upon a
basis of four, months’ credit; if cash pay
ments arc made, or less time asked, certain
discounts arc allowed. The extreme caution
exercised during the later years of the war
and the period just after its close, iu giving
redit is gradually relaxing, and business is
carried on more according to the customs
prevailing in former limes. In the uncer
tainty which attended all mercantile trans
actions during the years J801 to 1805, when
gold was fluctuating sometimes in a single
lay more widely than it does now in a year
and when attain* were so entirely unsettled
that it was not safe to givonny credit, a
close cash business was necessarily done.—
Suits on promissory notes were almost un
known inlaw offices were that class of ac
tions bad lormcly constituted the chief busi
ness. It is eminently proper to relax this
usual and inflexible .cash system, as the
state of affair* int hr country and the com.
putative certainty attending commercial op
erations warrant such a step.
Hut wo see no good reason why the cus
tom nf giving credits should he extended
beyond its present reasonable limits. It is
wed known tlmt one of the principal causes
of the panic of IHf»7 was the very great ex
tent to which business had been done on a
credit; and we believe it (piiteas generally
conceded tlmt the fact of there being very
little commercial paper afloat ut the end of
the war bat been one oftlu* most important
assistants in carrying ns through the past
two years without a severe financial crisis
The experience just referred to, of the in
jury worked hy excessive credits in one rnso
and of the benefit realized from tlio cash sys
tem iu the oilier, is in itself sufficiently
stvong to have much influence in guiding fu
ture action, but reason, wo think, poiuts in
t he same direction. The fact is simply this
—tlmt the long credit method is one by
which goods run ho bought with promises
to pay. The cash or short credit method
call for money immediately or iu a Very
short time. The tendency with purehasev*
will always lie to ask for long credit, and a
custom ot giving such credit once establish
ed cannot easily bo changed until at lchgtli
some great revulsion overthrows every
thing, and anew order of things is started
The wisest course would seem to bo to
keep up the present custom of giving credit
lor a reasonable time; the interests of both
seller and buyer will be promoted, and the
total amoiim of legitimate business done in
a year will be quite as large ns if the trans
actions were notes of from six to twelve
months.
Mr m nut Tit mi. in Snxrmt.—The five
negroes, lieu Home, ltich.ird Home, Scott
Home, F.dwanl Home, and George Jackson
Jr., charged with the murder ot Judge
Home, were tried at the recent session oftlu*
Superior Court in .Sumter, resulting in tho
conviction of all of murder under the first
degree—the last named, George Jackson, jr
being rev commended to the mercy ol the
court. An appeal will be taken to the Su
preme Court.
CiiKitoKKK Grokoiax.—Wo notice from
the editor’s valedictory tlmt this paper has
been sold to a member of the Ilepublieaii
party, and that anew paper will be issued
devoted to the interests of this party in
Georgia, which will be railed “Tho North
Georgia Kepubliean.” Wo aro sorry to
dearn that a lack of patronage constrained
the proprietor to sell out. In retiring from
the editorial chair, Mr Hanks, 1ms our best
w ishes for bis success in the practice of his
profession (law) to which in future he will
exclusively devote himself.

Paragraph 11 of General Order No 00,
reads ns follows:
“An election will be held in this State on
Tuesday the 20th day of October, 1807, con
tinning three days, at which registered vo
ters ot the State may vote tor a convention
and for delegates to constitute the Conven
tion, iu ease a majority ofthc voters given
on that rpiestion shall be given for n con
vention and in ease a mnjority of such re
quested voters shall have voted on the ques
tion of holding such convention.”
We presume that tho registration for the
State has been fully completedf and that the
blacks arc in tho majority, ns in all the
Southern States except In Virginia. The
registration list in our county stands in the
rates of six blacks to one white, and in the
State according to the published statement,
tlu* blacks aro in tho majority of betwoon
three and fotrthousand. This district, com
posed of the counties of Dougherty, Lee, and
Worth, will beenlisted tp four.delegates t n
tho convention provided one is held.
Scon's Magazine,—This excellent
monthly for August has again made its a|>-
pearnnoo, filled as usual with choice read
ing matter. Wo can recommend it as be
ing a first rate literary magazine, nud enti
tled to Southern patronage.
IIox. IIkeschbu. V. Johnson.—This dis
tinguished son of Georgia, visted onr city
on last Saturday evening, and left 3unday
morning last on tho train, He is in excel
lent health and looks quite well.

YjftLiw FKvift.-^-ThU dreadful scourge
is on the Increaso in Texas—one thousand
cases reported in Houston, and the deaths
average from ten to fifteen daily. The epi
demic is all prevailing ton great extent and
ift very virulent in Hempstead Navnsotn,
Millican, Bryan, Chape Hall, Breiihnm, Lt*
grange, Huntsville nnd Alleytown, ami the
people nre asking for money, doctors and
nurses.
Bilkd'orms, fried in castor oil* arc
considered a luxury in Chinn.
An American paper speaks of a man
“who died without the nid of a physician,”
nnp adds that such instances are rare.
(y Judge Warner has written a letter?
that lias been published in tho Atlanta pa
pers, in which lie deelnrcs himself in favor of
accepting and carrying out the reconstruc
tion measures of Congress.
A lady was asked the other day
why she chose to live a single life. She
naively replied : Because I am not able to
H tippr*pt a husband.”
I3f ^ W by do*i l t you wheel that harrow of
coah^ Ned ?* said a learned miner to one of
his sons. “It’s not a very hard job; there
is an inclince plane to relieve you.” ‘Ah/
replied Ned, who had more relish for wit
than work, “die ptanenmy be inclined, but
hang me il l am.”
- fir©"“Cmm* till Ami riky, writes a
sonoflhe Kmerald Isle to his friend in Irel
and; ‘‘lisa flue country to get a living in.—
All ye have to do i« to^ct a threo cornered
box and fill it wid bricks, and carry it till
tho topav a three story Imildlng/and tho

Kxkmi-jjon khoxi Juitv Duty.—We
learn that the Inferior Court of thia County
have exempted from Jury duty, except tho
Grand Jury of the Superior Court, the mem
bers of Throimtoska and KagloFira compa
nies. Thia is eminently wist and proper nt
this time, from tho fact that so many busi
ness houses have recently been erected in
which our citizens has invested so lieaily,
and which would roqnre in tho event olfire
the aid of efficient and well organized fire-
companies, which by the passage of this
timely order tho court evidently intended to
foster and encourage.
County Tax.—Tho Interior Court of this
county Ims assessed a tax of 145 per, cent
on the State fax for tho purposo of liquidat
ing the past indebtedness anil to meet the
current expenses of tho county. This tax
will be sufficient to pay tho county out ol
debt, and furnish a Bind for tho rebuilding
of the bridges in the county, mid nil expen
ses incurred}during the year.

It is urged upon Hancock, nt Headquar
ters, tlmt there is no immediate necessity
lor his prosettee in tho fifth District. The
Presit lent expresses confidence tlmt notwith
standing appearances, the elections Sontli
will occur simultaneously.
Washington, September 21—A sugges
tive question has arisen in the City Council.
Tho lower Board which went in on negro

count of holding over, have a majority in
favor of one per cent. A conference waa

concur, and tho city fiimnees are nt a stand
still. In another year it will give tho black
Uadicnls the upper house, when their favor
ites can have remunerative commissioners.
Gen. Sheridan is summoned and will ap
