Mathy Haynes, of tba Highland
neighborhood, has soufc ns in a stalk of
tobacco that is something of a curiosity,
Upon the iunerside of the leaf growing
otit from the main stem are minatnre
plants perfect in every essential. The
parent leaf bearing the new growth is
gnarled or ill shapen.
(Hartford Herald.]
Mr. Mart Mitchell raised cal bage this
season so large that they can not be
forced into a barrel without halving.
Mrs. Stephen Daniel raised some of
the boss beots. One we noticed was
nineteen inches in circumference—
grew fifteen inches below, making alto
gether sixty inches in length; who can
beat this beet?
[Campbollville Green River Press.]'
A pumpkin that weighs ninety-five
ponnds, is six feet in circumference and
twenty-two inches in diametor, has been
sent to this office by Mr: Henry Dear-
log, who lives on Green river.
[Paducah News.]
Mr. Ballowe, who lives near the city,
brought ns a radish this morning which
bangs anything in that line ever seen or
heard of before. It is -abont sixteen
inches in circumference and four and a
half to five inches in diameter at the top,
and five feet six inches long. If Stan
ton, Craddock or any other man can
beat this vegetable let thorn be heard
from at once.
[Frantfoit Yeoman.]
*We have the boss pumpkin of thesea-
son. It measures five feet eight inches
the long circumferenee, four feet three
inches the short circumference, and
weighs sixty-five ponnds. It was grown
upon the farm of Gen. Scott Brown,
who brought it to the city yesterday to
gratify the curiosity Beekers. Gen.
Brown is President of the Indus
trial Assoaiation, and, as such, is enti
tled to know a big pumpkin when he
sees'it. He says this is the largest he
has ever seen. An experienced house
keeper said yesterday it would supply a
small family with pies for the whole
winter.

Augusta News: Twenty-five years
ngo lo-day, on the 25th of October,
1854, was made the famous chargo of
the ’’Im moital Six Hundred” at the
charge of Balakluva, during the Crime

Htnited the command of Lord Cardigan.
The world is familiar with the thrilling
details of that desperate and deadly
ride. One year ago only 170 of these
veterans were alive. To-day this anni
versary will be celebrated in London
with no little eclat, and wherever Brit

of that eventful day will be celebrated.

Gang of Bobbers.—An. ex-member
of tho Alnbama Legislature named
Cockrell was arrested recently upon
suspicion, and it has since been ascer
tained that he was the leader of a gang
of robbers that have been committing
depredations in the central part of the
state for several yearn. His band con
sists mainly of negroes, and the rob
bery of the Greene County treasury
lead to pursuit, capture and exposure.
In Cockrell’s house.$6,500 of the money
and several thousand in bonds and se
curities stolen from the Treasurer’s of
fice were found. The only white men
associated with the gang so far us has
been discovered, except Cockrell, were
his two bre thers, both of whom are
scarcely grown.

IRON RAILING,
An old pioneer, who was something
of a fatalist, lived in a region infested
by Indians. He always took his gun
with him, and once, finding that some
ofiha family had taken it out, he would
not go withont it. His friends called
him, saying that there was no danger of
the Indians, us he would not die till his
time come, anyhow. “Yes” said he,
“but suppose I was to meet air Indian
and bis time had come to die, it would
nokdo not to have my gnn.”
A tramp got a new snit of clothes ont
<©f the Sidney, O., authorities in a very
.original way. He committed some
light offense, for which he was put in
jail. As soon ashe was behind the bars
he deliberately took off his clothes and
cut them into shreds, including his
boots. Of course, a new snit had to
be purchased for him so he could ap
pear for triil.
A prominent New York man, when on
his death Led, requested his friends to

He had probably a large lot of white
