May lath.
It has been my pleasure to give
my best efforts in an endeavor to
defeat the- bill establishing the an
gle gold standard and making the
people dependent upon the National
Banks for-their money. The repub
lican party is further, following in
the footsteps of England by declar
ing for a colonial system and impe
rialism. I oppose this and other
unjust republican legislation against
the interests of my people. I have
introduced a bill to repeal the War
Stamp tax; but the Ways and Means
let the same be considered. I have
at all times stood for true, democrat

never, I think, found me unfaithful
nor unwilling.
In appealing to the people of my
district, I feel that I call upon as
just and noble a people as live with

with an account of my stewardship,
sure of justice and fair treatment.

I have tried, as often as one time,
to read a report of the Secretary of
the Treasury. I thought it was well
to exercise the mind that way. The
words of the honorable Secretary^
considered separately, were plain
enough, but his meaning was not
clear. Perhaps he understood it.
Or he may have reasoned, with him
self that it is never unsafe to discuss
the obtuse questions of finance, be
cause very few men are able to de
tect and expose the fallacies of the
discussion, and these few are busy
with other matters. When, the dis
cussion deals with the subtle phases
of finance, such as elasticity of the
currency, it seems to a novice that
the thing might contract at the
wrong time. I think it would. But
there is much about money and the
use of it, and the power of it, that
is easily understood.
Recently a bill was passed estab
lishing the gold standard, and con
trary to till argument and all philos

the beef is not improved, and the
conclusion is unavoidable that the
purchasing power of money is di
minished. Now I know that some
body will take the opposite view, for
there are many intelligent men who
will argue with all their might
against a mathematical demonstra
tion. For instance, an expert ac
countant in a neighboring town con
tends that the present year is the
beginning of the twentieth century.
I cahsee clearly enough that my
beef argument maybe controverted,
if some-one shall say that politicians
are cheaper than ever. But may not
this imply an obvious deterioration
of the commodity?

Following the suggestion of The
Constitution, in connection with
the views of Colonel B. T. Hesbitt,
brought out by the condition of the
cotton market at the opening of
the present season, the producers
of Georgia have determined upon
united work for the purpose of
meeting the next market.
The initiative was taken by the
farmers df Troop county, who have
taken an intlefiigent interest in the
matter from the first. They have
called upon their brother farmers
of the state to meet in convention
on May 12th in Macon to take into
consideration sack measures as will
secure unity of purpose This con
vention should be attended by the
farmers of the slate generally, be
cause the more men who are actual
ly brought together the more are
influenced by the result.
The formers of Troup have al
ready marked out two important
guides to future success which, if
adopted, will go a long way toward
bringing abont the desired end.
The first is that the aid of mer
chants aud bankers is essential. It
is a fake policy which would limit
the consideration of agricultural
topics to those solely engaged in
that calling. The: men who supply
the credit as well as those who han
dle the products as merchants farm
a very important part of the class
affected, and their addition to any
formers’ consultation helps to per
fect and give it elements of
strength. The anbstantial aid giv
en by the bankers and merchants
the past season has demonstrated
the assistance the one can give to
the other. A continance of this
friendly condition should be the
aim of all who are interested in the
prosperity of our country.
The second pointrstaked out by
Troup county is that the politician
should be excluded. A politician
has no more business in or about
a formers’ convention than he
would have about a directory meet-
ingof a bank or a brick kiln. Bus
iness should be considered from, a
basin ess standpoint purely,, and a
forming assembly hason hand bus
iness of a very serious nature. If
aor agriculturists wilL securely
rule out the politician and estab
lish a fast alliance with the bank
ers and merchants they will have
au opportunity of improving their
condition.
The Constitution congratulates
the farmers of the state on these
evidences of progress and will
watch with, attention their future
development.
