Despite'the fact that there are
more candidates with their claims
before the people of Houston than
ever before within the political his
tory of the county, the campaign is
progressing smoothly.
Each candidate seems to be “tot
ing his own skillet” with: becoming
dignity. So far as we have heard,
no candidate has attacked the char
acter or reputation of another, and
no backbiting has come to our ears.
I This is as it' should be, and we
| hope it will so continue to the end.
It is a matter of great satisfaction
to the friends of onr faithful repre
sentative, Hon. E. B. Lewis, that, in
all his course in congress, covering a
a period of nearly foar years, during
which.time he has not lost exceed
ing fh e legislative days, and has re
corded his vote on every public ques
tion of any moment, never dodging
the issue, but manfully meeting it in
every instance. His opponent can find
only two votes on which, to criticise
him; and on both of those votes Mr.
Dewis stood with the majority of the
Executive Committee meeting.
The Democratic Executive Com

transaction of such other business as
may come before the meeting.

If any improper persuasion is be
ing used to induce support of any
candidate, we have not heard of it,
and sincerely hope that if there be a
condidate so small as to resort to
low measures, that he will be given
a very low vote on Slay 15th.
The citizenship of Houston ranks
high in genuine merit, and none but
true and worthy men should be cho^

ty. Our citizens are upright, manly
men, and no less meritorious charac

political campaign.
So far the campaign is fair and
square, and we believe it will so con

The people will enter judgment,

No district in Georgia is more
ably and faithfully represented than
the Third. Mr. Lewis- is always

have honored him. _ He never per

request unattended to, and the poor
est of his constituents receive the
same consideration at his hands as
the richest.
Let us have fair play and set hon
esty above the tricks ^>f the dema
gogue. Mr. Lewis is faithful and
able, and his opponent has not and
cannot cite a single instance where
he has been derelict in bis duty.
His opponent’s only argument is
that he himself is the only man ca
pable of representing the district,
and while he has been harangueiug

serving the people in his accustomed
faithful way. The people of the
good old Third have rallied, and

—Fine rains, good fishing and plen
ty of 'garden sass are among the
things that we are enjoying now.
- All the neighbors on the Old Hill,
with their wives, children, sweet
hearts and cooks enjoyed an all-day
fishing frolic at Toomer’s Mill last
Saturday, and some of the boys en
joyed it so much that they contin
ued the fish all that night. A large
party of gentlemen from in and
around Henderson took a couple of
days off last week at Cater’s Mill.

At Augusta,* Ga., the "Merry Mak
ers’ Celebration” is now in progress,
consisting of floral parade, display
of fireworks, and electric production
of Niagara Falls. The Central of
Georgia and other railroads give
low excursion rates.
A New Yobk paper quotes the
tfiondbn Spectator as saying: "Ad-
miral'Dewey, who took Santiago,
has consented to stand for'the pres
idency of the United States, as' the
candidate, of the people, and there
fore Hanna and 'Platt are wild with
rage and doubt.”
It is humiliating to an honest peo
ple to be forced to the conclusion
that “Representatives” of the people
vote for or against measures in con
gress for personal or party reasons
exclusively. But we cannot avoid
the conclusion that the republicans
in congress aye being controlled by
their desire to influence votes in the
the coming national campaign.
In some measure this may be true
of others than republican congress
men and senators, but no one who
reads the reports from Washington
can escape the conviction that the
republicans care nothing for the
public good, unless its promotion
will also gain yotes for candidates
of-the republican party.
On this line our Washington cor
respondent says:
“Another bluff that the republi
cans are trying to work on the coun
try is in connection with the repeal
of a portion of the war revenue act,
and a consequent reduction of the
surplus of $150,000,000 which will
be piled up in the treasury by June
of next year. The members of the
House, who are nearest the people
and who have most to fear by their
resentment next fall, are pretending
to urge the repeal of some of these
features of the war tax, but the
members of their “wicked partner,”
the Senate, are resisting it. After a
while it will be given out that noth
ing will be attempted because the
Senate will not consent. As a mat
ter of fact, neither the president nor
the party wishes to reduce taxation.
The treasury now has some $125,-
000,000 loaned out to favored banks
throughout the country. By next
fall there will be $75,000,000 more
to loan. No interest is asked on this,
and the banks will be told thaj; if
the republican party remains in pow
er the money will be continued to
them indefinitely. What is more
probable than that the grateful
banks will insist on contributing to
the republican campaign fund a
small portion of the amount they
would have to pay in interest if they
should borrow the same, amount of
money elsewhere. Gh, no; to repeal
the war -tax would cut -off at least
$2,000,000 of campaign funds to be
derived from the banks, and the re
publicans are not anxious for anj-
thing of that sort. • Representative
DeArmond, of Missouri, has intro
duced a bill to require the banks to
pay interest to the government on
these deposits, but nothing is more
certain than that it will be smother
ed in committee.”

For State Senator.
To the Democrats of Houston'County:
Taylor, Crawford Co., Ga., April 17.1900
I take this method to solicit your con
sideration of the fact that through the
solicitation of many'friends I have al
lowed my name to go before the people
of the 280 Senatorial district. This no
doubt will be the, last, ai it is truly the
first time I ever allowed my name to
go before the public; but should I Jje
honored by the people, I pledge myself
to not be fonnd wanting, to do any and
all things that there is a possibility to
do, for I well know and sincerely believe
that it is high time a move was made by
the good people of this great state to
lower taxes and build up the farming in-
dnstry that is the driving wheel to, all
the industries of the nation.
I am and ever have been a democrat
and do believe it, and its principles exe
cuted, is the only safeguard to the up
building of this Southland. My father
was one of the first settlers of this coun
ty in 1828, and this portion of the couuty
has never had a senator, and only three
repreresentatives since it was a county.
So by the rotation rule I can but think
we should' have a portion of thejrepresen-
tation. In conclusion I appeal to the
good people of the district to give this
old Confederate a good support, as the
time will soon come when their presence
will be no more. Mr.' Walker, my oppo
nent, has been honored, and he, being a
vonng man,can still have time to appear

Mr. J. E. Haslam, Marshallville, Ga.:
Dear Sir—In reply to yours of 17th,you
evidently misunderstood our former let-
trr. What we want to know is that when
yon made S. S. S. for this company some
years ago did yon use the same quantity
of each root. We cannot see how this in
formation could affect your business, and
if you can give it we would appreciate
the favor. Very truly,
