Major league baseball managers have always
been the worst alibiers in the world of sports.
Even when their team is floundering in last place
the baseball bosses find ways of wooing the fans
with excuses on why his club is losing. They know
how to straighten out their problems, too, at least
that’s what they tell the press.
Here are a few hypothetical cases on what was
said, and what was meant.
Walter Alston manager of the skidding Los
Angeles Dodgers.
WHAT WAS SAID;
“Our defense, especially the infield, has had a
lot of hard luck so far. These young kids have
never played together before and, as yet, don’t
know how to play as a unit. When we start playing
together we’re really going to show this league
something.”
WHAT WAS MEANT:
“You just can’t depend on rookies.”
Ted Williams, manager of the hapless Texas
Rangers.
WHAT WAS SAID:
“We’ve gotten off to a slow start because of the
player strike. Our guys were ready to play and
then the strike came along and knocked the en
thusiasm out of us. I think after the all-star break
we'll get cranked up and shake up our fans and
make a run for the first division.”
WHAT WAS MEANT:
“We don’t have any pitching or hitting. How do
you win without it?”
Earl Weaver, manager of the wilting Baltimore
Orioles.
WHAT WAS SAID:
“We’ve won so many pennants in recent years
that every team we play is out to get us. Also, our
hitting has been off so far and we aren’t driving in
those game winning runs. But, before the season
is over we'll get our bats hot and pull out another
nag.”
WHAT WAS MEANT:
“We sure have missed Frank Robinson. He used
to always bring in the big run. I wished we hadn’t
traded him.”
Dick Williams, manager of the Oakland A’s, on
what’s wrong with Vida Blue.
WHAT WAS SAID:
“Vida just hasn’t gotten into the groove yet,
besides we haven’t been getting him any runs. As
soon as we back Vida with some runs and his fast
ball starts hopping he’ll win 15 games or more
before the season is over.
WHAT WAS MEANT:
“He’s washed up at age 22 and his attitude is
lousy.”
Manager Luman Harris of the up and down
Atlanta Braves.
WHAT WAS SAID:
“Well I’ll tell you. We’ve had a lot of tough luck
with our pitching, especially our bullpen. Neikro,
Reed, Upshaw and the rest of our staff have given
us their best, but they haven’t been given
adequate fielding and hitting support. We must
have stranded a thousand runners, already, this
season. Our big guns just aren’t producing like
they should.
If we could get over making so many mistakes,
we could make a real run at the Reds and Astros."
WHAT WAS MEANT:
“Who am 1 trying to kid? We don’t have a dog’s
chance of winning in our division. Our team just
doesn’t have the talent other teams have. We’re
over the hill.”

HLB Blasts
CECI4 to 6
Ed watson tossed a fine 4
hitter to defeat the Catholic-
Episcopal churches 14 to 6
for Houston Lake Baptist. Ed
only allowed 3 hits in the 4th
and one in the 6th, all singles.
HLB played super defense
except for a sloppy 4th and
6th when CEC scored.
The HLB infield got
careless in those innings to
boot the runs home. On the
other hand Kevin Beste
(twice), David Meyer and
Jerry Payne displayed some
exceptional hustle on the
base paths to force the
Baptist miscues. Johnny
played his usual game. He
made all the catches in
center including a running,
sliding, catch to rob Inge
Smith of a hit. John also hit
four for five including a
double and he is always a
tough out. Larry Bellflower
hit 3 for 4 and blasted a
homer. Watson chipped in a
couple of hits. Kevin Gordon
played a good game for
CEC.
Jets Clip
CEC 10-4
The Perry Methodist Jets
won over the Catholic-
Episcopal churches 10 to 4.
Jets outhit CEC 14 to 9. AD
Jet hits were singles except a
Barfield double. Rodney
Lowe was the Jet leader with
3 for 4 and played a tough
shortstop. Lowe teamed with
his catcher Clay to throw out
2 runners at home on close
plays.
In the close game the 4th
saw CEC boot 4 runs home
for the Jets. Lewis Bledsoe
pitched a good game. He
allowed a two run triple to
David Meyer, an RBI sac fly
plus solo homer to Jerry
Payne, doubles to Steve
Beste and David Vuxta.
Bledsoe caused 20 batters to
pop or fly out. Barfield, Lowe
and W. Gray scored 2 Jet
runs each. Watson, Vogt, S.
Gray and Bledsoe scored one

Registration will be held at
the Houston Jr. Hi. Athletic

9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the dates
shown. Perry is expanding
play this year and will field
two teams in each league,
the Panthers in the Western
Division and the Saints in the
Eastern Division.
The Perry teams had a
fine record last year winning
the County championship in
die Mite league and cap
turing 3rd place in both the
“B” and “A” leagues. All
boys are urged to join and
have another fine year of
football in Perry.
Anyone having any
questions regarding the
program may contact J. C.
Parker 987-4277. Also any
adults desiring to help as a
coach or an assistant is
asked to contact Mr. Parker.
The game was called after
Dooley’s knockout blow.
Panther Joel Mims had a hit.
Defensively the Panther
infield shown as Whitt Smith
was in on 11 outs at short
stop, Bert Harvey at first
handled eleven and
showed a lot of hustle
keeping runners from
moving up a base, Richie
Morrison at second handled
his three chances well, Mike
Harding was in on 4 plays,
three being long and good
throws to first. Pitcher John
Scott only had two chances
but one was a screaming
liner he speared and the
other the same but which he
knocked down and still
nipped the runner. First year
player, six year old, Mike
Parker catcher threw 3 out
at first and ran with effort on
the bases.
T Pirates
Roll Again
The Perry Pirates
maintained their unbeaten
status by soundly whipping
the Warner Robins Senators
26 to 11 in a recent T-League
game. Two of the Pirates
season long sluggers, Darryl
Albritton and Marvin
Nobles, smashed home runs
for the Pirates.
Leading the Pirate offense
with three hits each were
Lee Baase, Gary Bramlett,
Joey Robbins, Brian Lewis,
Darryl Albritton, Mark
Green and Marvin Nobles.
Pirates with two hits each
were Stephen Harris, Jeff
Merritt, Garnett Clark,
Tracy Allen, Jim Fudge and
Ken Hammock.
Rembisz Leads
Senior’s 12-1
Doug Rembisz spun a nifty
three hitter over the Sr.
League Warner Robins
Hawks to earn a 12 to 1
victory. Rembisz allowed 2
singles and a double. He
struck out 6 and walked one.
Rembisz is a first year Sr.
league player but was the
scourge of the Jr. league last
year and is the main reason
his team won the County
championship.
Joe Andrews paced the
Cougar Victory with 2 for 3.
Larry Bonner, Doug
Rembisz, Wayne Roberts
and Alphonso Soloman each
had a Cougar hit. Jaru Ash,
Mo Wright, Earl Brown,
Jerry Barnes, David
Thomas and Steve Miller
played for Perry. We know
the Cougars have won at
least five and lost three in a
very tough 15-17 age group.
