JULY 27, 1972
and it was the first Panther
loss this year. The third and
final game was a stem
winder right to the final out.
Some of the finest defense
ever seen in this age group
took place in the series.
Super play after super play
was the routine. Both infields
were superb! The Panthers
had Bert Harvey at first,
Richie Morrison at second,
Whitt Smith at
shortstop, Mike Harding at
third, John Scott at Pitcher
and Mike Parker at catcher.
The Pirates placed Darryl
Albritton at first, Lee Baase
at second, Marvin “Tumpot”
Nobles at shortstop, Ken
Hammock at third, Jim
Fudge at catcher and Zack
Sorrows at Pitcher.
These infields were great
and by virtue of the fact they
handled so many of the plays
Albritton and Nobles of the
Pirates and Harvey and
Smith of the Panthers were
standouts. Every player on
both teams did his best and
each boy made his con
tribution to some fine
baseball play.
Game l:Close all the way.
Great defense both sides.
Low scores every inning. For
the Panthers Whitt Smith
and Bert Harvey excelled on
defense, Harvey and Joe
Thomas had 4 hits each with
Thomas scoring 4 runs.
Blake Westmoreland hit a
solo homer. Westmoreland,
John Scott and Richie
Morrison drove in 2 runs
each. For the Pirates Marvin
Nobles. Ken Hammock and
Darryl Albritton were great
on defense. Steve Harris,
Mark Green, Zack Sorrows,
Joey Robbins, Albritton and
Jim Fudge led with 3 hits
each. Robbins scored 3 runs.
Stephen Harris homered.
Game 2; The two turning
points were the Panthers
loose play in the second to
allow 8 runs and the great
Pirate defense in the 4th
allowing only one run. Baase
and Sorrows of the Pirates
had 4 hits apiece while Green
and Sorrows scored 3 runs
each. Harvey led the Pan
thers with 4 hits while he and
Morrison scored 3 runs each
and Whitt Smith drove in 3
runs. Harvey homered for
the Panthers and Harris did
the same for the Pirates.
Game 3: This was an all
out, deep down, real battle
again with the edge to the
Panthers. Defense was the
key as the Pirates were held
to a run in the first and only
two in the third. Harding got
a double play to stem the
Pirate outburst in the second
and Smith pulled off a triple
play which may have
signalled the end. Scott
handled a lot of plays well.
Westmoreland, Jackson,
Smith, Ferguson, Mims and
Marshall had 3 hits each.
Smith drove in 3 runs and he,
Jackson and Thomas scored
twice each. For the Pirates
I-ee Baase homered for 2
runs. Pirate Sorrows had 4
hits. Harris, Sorrows and
Albritton had 3 RBl’s and
Albritton scored 3 runs.

Saturday’s T-League
jjj championship in Perry
jjj pitted two of the finest teams
j:j - Panthers and Pirates -
jij against one another. The
jij game also provided Perry
$ fans a look at two of the most
jij dedicated head coaches, who
x have built their respective
jjj teams into T-League
powerhouses.
Bob Harding, head mentor
ij: of the 1972 champion Pan
iji thers, has just completed his
iji third year as head coach of
iji the Panthers. During his
iji reign Harding has compiled
iji a brilliant record of 28 wins
compared with only 3 set
;jij backs.
:jij Harding, who is the chief
jjij accountant for Pabst
•jij Brewing Company, moved to
jjij Perry three years ago from
jj; Peoria, Illinois. He has two
jjj: children in the Houston
jjj County Baseball for Youth
program; Mike, who plays
for the T-League Panthers
j:j and Ricky, who performs for
ijj the B-League Tigers. Bob is
jij also head co-ordinator for
jij the Baseball for Youth
•ij program in Perry, which
|j includes all age groups from
* 6 to 17. The T-League
jij program, in which he has
jij coached for three years, is
jij the only baseball he has ever
jjj coached. In his first season
jjj at the helm of the Panthers,
Bob’s team was 10-0. He
iji followed that with an 8-2
iji record last year, and then
iji recorded a 10-1 slate this
jjj season and the T-League
iji championship,
jij When asked why he works
jij as a coach in the Baseball for
jij Youth program, Bob stated,
x “When I was in Peoria, there
jij was no program for boys in
the 6 thru 8 year old range,
iji and I realized that there can
jiji only be a good program for
X; youth when there are men
jiji who will work with the youth.
X; That’s why I offered my
jiji services, and I enjoy it.”
jjj: Coach Harding is helped
on the sidelines by assistant
coaches Richard Smith, Jim
x Parker and David West

iji Coach Doug Baase of the
jij T-League Pirates has also

youngsters had never tasted jjj:
defeat since his arrival. Last jij;

playoffs. This past season
Baase’ Pirates continued iji
their unbeaten string by iji
rolling up another unbeaten iji
mark during the regular iji
season. The Pirates two iji

the championship playoffs :|:
were the first setbacks for
Baase and his Pirates in two
years.
Like Harding, Doug Baase
came from the North to the £
South. Doug moved to Perry $
in 1959 after completing £
military service. He is J:j
originally from Cattaraugus, £
New York, but now calls
Perry his home. Doug is
employed by Warner Robins
Air Force Base and works in
the maintenance depart- i|;
ment. He has a son, Lee, who ij:
plays for the Pirates and is ij:
one of the stars of the team, ij:
Doug not only coaches ij:
baseball. Earlier in the year jjj;
he coached the mite jjj:

Doug gives most of the ij:
credit to his assistant ;j:

the past two seasons. Jack ij;
Brewer, a Perry High School :;j;
senior, has helped Doug ij
since he started coaching. «
“Jack is great with kids and
gets their respect,” Doug ij;
said about his young :jj:
assistant. Millard Albritton jjj;
has also been with Doug for :jj;
two years. Doug also has ijj
used the talents of Bill :ji
Merritt and Gail Sorrows, iji;
This is the task force behind ;j:|
the fine record of the T- S
League Pirates. jj;:
Doug enjoys working in the j:j:
